India today tuned itself to the global trend of free trade by announcing an Export Import Policy that does away with restrictions on all imports, except some Defence items, takes the agro sector in its fold and further simplifies procedures.

Bonanza awaits consumers

Anything and almost everything that affects the common man’s day-to-day existence will now be available under foreign brands in the country. For the consumer though, it is a bonanza as the government today removed quantitative restrictions from all 715 items that were hitherto under the special import licence regime.

The Election Commission today announced a one-day Assembly poll in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Pondicherry on May 10. Counting of votes will take place on May 13, Chief Election Commissioner Dr M.S. Gill told newspersons here.

Lt-Gen Arjun Singh Khanna, an artillery officer who won a Vir Chakra in the 1965 war, will assume charge of the critical post of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Planning and System) from Lt-Gen S.S. Mehta tomorrow.

The final report on the defence deals since April 1989 was submitted today by the Central Vigilance Commissioner, Mr N. Vittal, to the Defence Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh.
