Shooters leave for Badal

Ludhiana, March 28
Badal, the native village of Mr Parkash Singh Badal, is on way to becoming a major centre for shooting, hockey and swimming competitions and coaching camps in these disciplines.

A contingent of 52 shooters, comprising 24 girls and 28 boys, accompanied by seven officials, led by Mr T.S Dhillon, Deputy Director, Punjab Police Academy, today left for Badal, to give a demonstration of their shooting skills to the rural population of the area on a special invitation of the Chief Minister.

Mr Parkash Singh Badal, who was in Panjab Police Academy recently in connection with the passing out parade of the academy, was impressed with the show of shooting skills displayed by Mr Dhillon. The Chief Minister had invited Mr Dhillon and the shooters taking part in the coaching camp currently under way at the academy, and to see the 50-metre multipurpose shooting range.

Some of the stars at Badal village will be ace shooter Jaspal Rana, Arjuna Award winner S. Kumar, Olympian Anjili Vedpathak, and international shooters Suma Dixit, Surmesh Jang, Sonia Rana, Shilpi Singh and Anju Tere, among others.

Sportsmen to get scholarships

All sports person who had applied for the scholarship for their achievements in the years 1998, 1999 and 2000 through the District Sports department, can collect their scholarships from the District Sports Office, Guru Nanak Stadium on April 3.

Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer said in a press note issued here today that all the student would be required to get their bonafides attested from the institution concerned.

He disclosed that Rs 1.87 lakhs sports scholarship had been awarded by the Sports Department to the sportsperson of Ludhiana for their achievements.

Khanna budget passed

A budget of Rs 1,490 lakh was passed at a special meeting of the local MC here today with some amendments suggested by some Opposition members. According to information, proposed budget of Rs 1,330 lakh was presented at the meeting. The major source of the MC income, octroi, was shown Rs 723 lakh, against the previous income of contact given to private contractors, Rs 736 lakh raising the issue of less proposed income. The councillors, Iqbal Singh and Vijay Sharma, said the proposed budget was against the guidelines of the state government. They said in the budget the income from octroi should have been proposed 10 per cent extra than the previous year. The issue was unanimously passed.

It is pertinent to mention here that the budget presented in the house was of Rs 1,330 lakh but after some suggestions the amount was raised to Rs 1,490 lakh and passed .

Income from other sources was: general bus stand Rs 29.50 lakh, from rent Rs 40 lakh, from sale of property Rs 50 lakh and from building funds of Rs 16 lakh. In the expenditure column the council has passed Rs 539 lakh for establishment which is 40 per cent of the total budget, while Rs 80 lakh was proposed for contingency expenditures which is 5 per cent of the budget.

More than Rs 5 crore was passed for the various development works of the city out of which a major amount of Rs 345 lakh was reserved for water supply and sewerage system of the city.

Out of this amount Rs 15 lakh will be spent on construction of water tanks, digging of tubewells and for laying of new water supply lines while Rs 60 lakh will be spent on maintenance of water supply. A Rs 72 lakh will be given to the Sewerage Board for the completion of the Rs 8.52 crore sewerage disposal project which is already in progress. A sum of Rs 48 lakh has been reserved for the proposed water supply and sewerage project.
