Aiket Memorial lecture in PGI

Delivering the ninth Aiket Memorial lecture on the eve of the three-day surgical pathological conference to be held in the PGI from tomorrow, eminent doctor from the USA Dr V.V. Joshi said that India is the new epicenter for the paediatric HIV cases. There are around 5.7 lakh HIV-infected children, a majority of whom reside in developing countries.

Dr Joshi said that by the end of 2000, there were 30,000 children who became motherless in the New York city alone. In Mumbai also, a study in 1999 showed, that 18 boys and 10 girls were HIV positive. He also praised the PGI for conducting systematic autopsies.

City cardiologist invited to USA

Dr R.K. Jaiswal, a city cardiologist, has been asked to participate in the 50th Annual Conference of American College of Cardiology at Orlando, Florida, USA from March 18 to March 21, 2001.

Dr Jaiswal said that it would be great honour to be able to interact and discuss the latest techniques with worldclass specialists.

Dr Jaiswal is an interventional cardiologist in the private sector and after training in the non-invasive and invasive cardiological procedures like PTCA, stenting and ballooning, be has conducted a large number of high-risk angioplasties and stent placements.

Special polio drive planned

Chandigarh, March 14
The Health Department of the Administration will conduct a mop-up round under the pulse polio immunisation campaign 2000-2001 from March 16 to 20 in the Union Territory. Discussing the strategy of the campaign, Dr Rameshwar Chander, Director, Health Services, today urged the residents of the city to participate in the mop-up round and make it a complete success.

According to Dr M.P. Minocha, Director, Family Welfare, during the campaign, children up to five years will be given the oral polio vaccine (OPV) in their homes itself.

The mop-up campaign has been organised keeping in view a case of wild polio virus detected in the city in October 2000 while in the country as many as 264 paralytic polio cases were confirmed in the same year.

Adopting a different strategy, as many as 64 supervisors, with about 300 teams will go from door to door under the campaign. The Health Department has mapped the area of the city and has identified 1,80,000 houses to be covered in this round.

Mr Chandigarh contest on March 18

Chandigarh Amateur Body Building Association will hold the 12th Mr Chandigarh Body Building Championship on March 18 at DAV College Auditorium, Sector 10. Weighing- in will begin at 9 a.m. on that day followed by pre-judging for all categories. This was disclosed by Mr Sunil Walia, president, CABBA.

More than 80 body builders drawn from Chandigarh, Panchkula and SAS Nagar are expected to vie for the ‘Mr Chandigarh’ title.

The body-building team will also be selected to represent UT in the 40th Senior National Body Building championship to be held at Ernakulam, Kerala.

Rural sports meet
The three-day rural sports meet, organised by the UT Sports department for villages situated within the periphery of Chandigarh, will begin tomorrow at Sports Complex, Sector 7. According to Mr K.S. Bharti, organising secretary, the seven villages, Dadu Majra, Khajeri, Dhanas, Maloya, Hallo Majra, Kishangarh and Mauli Jagran have confirmed their participation.The events to be held include, athletics, kabaddi,volleyball and tug-of-war.The tournament will begin tomorrow at 10.30 a.m.

Little all-rounder
Simranjeet Singh Bathlana, a student of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, Chandigarh, was recently declared best all-rounder during the National School Games (under 14) in cricket held at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
