Three killed as bus overturns
Lakhnaur (Kurali), March 9
Three persons were killed and 10 others were injured when a Punjab Roadways bus of the Amritsar Depot fell off the road and overturned in an effort to avoid crushing a bicycle rider, on the Kharar-Kurali National Highway, 34 km from here this afternoon. The bus (PB-02S-9918) had around 25 passengers and was on its way from Chandigarh to Amritsar.

Floor-wise sale of property likely
Chandigarh, March 9
To allow sale of property on a floor-wise basis, the Chandigarh Administration is going to implement the Punjab Apartment Act, 1995. This will apply to commercial as well as residential areas.

I am surprised at the report that suggests spraying of garbage dumps with DDT. In this information age, our authorities are so ill informed about environmental pollutants which have been banned the world over. DDT is a chemical which is abused and overused, despite volumes of data confirming its negative effects on the biosystem.

CRIME

50 pouches of whisky seized
Chandigarh, March 9
Two persons were arrested by the police and 50 pouches of Hero whisky were seized from them. Sham Lal, a resident of DMC, Chandigarh, was arrested from Sector 40, with 25 pouches of whisky and Rakesh Kumar was arrested by the police with 25 pouches of the same whisky from the Palsora colony.

Release PF to kiln worker

The High Court has directed the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner at Karnal to release general provident fund to a Yamunanagar district resident. Pronouncing the orders on a petition filed by Mr Suresh Kumar, earlier working with a brick kiln, Mr Justice R.S. Mongia and Mr Justice K.C. Gupta observed:

Consumer commission allows plea against forum order

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has allowed the appeal of Ajit Chawla, a resident of Panchkula, against the order of Consumer Forum-I. The complainant, who was dissatisfied with the relief granted to him by the District Forum-I, had moved complaint in the Consumer commission against the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority and State Bank of India, NRI Branch, Sector 17-B.

Bar Association elections on April 20

The District Bar Association has decided to hold elections for the office-bearers’ posts on April 20, for the year 2001-2002. Nominations for the post of president, vice-president, joint secretary, treasure, executive-members are invited between March 26 and March 31.

After completing the first phase of shooting the Punjabi TV serial “Apni Mitti”, the Director Krishan Lamba is all set to start two new ventures, one with a patriotic subject, “Udeek” and the second one with a theme of comedy called “Nain Preeto De”, both to be telecast on Zee Alpha Punjabi Channel.

Peter May of Berlin’s International Institute of Journalism concluded his three-day workshop on visual journalism in the Press Club here today with a demonstration of picture editing and layout. This widely travelled man with a German accent and a deep voice is hurt whenever he sees that a good photograph has been killed by a bad page layout and cropping.

PGI has 20 ventilators, half not working

The PGI is facing an acute shortage of life-saving ventilators. The premier health care institute of the north has approximately 20 ventilators in its inventory — half of which are not even in the working order.
