Dr Bassi elected NZOA president
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 7
Dr J.L. Bassi, Professor of Orthopaedics of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital has been elected president of North Zone Orthopaedics Association at the 20th Annual Conference of North Zone Orthopaedics Association, which concluded at Rohtak recently. Dr Bassi is the inventor of a Bassi Jig, with the help of which distal locking has been made possible.

During his study, he started doing innovative work on the hip. In 1992, he declared his method for reduction of posterior dislocated hip, which was published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, in England. Earlier to this, Biglow’s method was in use, in which patient was made to lie on the floor and dislocation of bone was managed by much manual effort. But in Dr Bassi’s method, the patient is made to lie on the table and this method is easier and comfortable for both the surgeon and the patient.

In 1996 rockwoods and Green’s published this method in the Orthopaedics textbook, ‘Fractures in Adults.’ In 1993, Dr Bassi went to Germany to study the interlocking nailing for the management of fracture of long bones. He realised, however, that the system was too costly and could not be applied to the Indian patients for economic reasons. In this system, image intensifier is needed which costs in lakhs.

This technique has now been mentioned in the book, ‘Manual of internal fixation techniques’. It has been recommended by the AO-ASIF Group that distal locking is impossible without an image intensifier. With this Jig, distal interlocking has been made possible and many patients have also benefited from this.
