Bajrang Dal warns of reaction to Taliban New Delhi, March 4 Addressing a press conference here, convener of the Bajrang Dal Surinder Jain said the barbaric act of the Taliban regime to destroy historic Buddhist statues, temples and the mausoleum of King Prithvi Raj Chauhan in Afghanistan was bound to have reaction. In Ajmer, the city of Prithvi Raj Chauhan (a great warrior of his time), some reactions have already been reported, he claimed. “Merely condemning the acts of Taliban is not sufficient, the government should see that the international community joins hands to fight the growing Islamic fundamentalism and ‘Jehad’ (holy war),” he felt. Most of the non-Islamic countries in the world, including India, the USA, China, Nepal and the United Kingdom today are affected by Islamic terrorism, he said and warned that if these nations did not form a forum, they would continue to be targeted by ‘jehadis’. Terming the destruction of the Buddhist statues by Taliban militia as an act of barbarism, the Bajrang Dal said it would hold demonstration all over the country tomorrow to express its anguish. In the capital, the protest will be held in the Khan Market area in the heart of the city. Asked to compare the destruction of statues and temples in Afghanistan with the demolition of Babri Masjid in India, Mr Jain justified the 1992 incident saying that Babri Masjid was constructed on a Ram temple by an invader, Babar, after he captured the Indian territory and was a sign of Muslim imperialism, but the statues in Afghanistan were no victory symbols.

Monastery decries demolition Gangtok, March 4 “We condemn the demolition of the Buddha statues by the Taliban militia in Afghanistan”, a spokesman of the Dharma Chakra Centre of the Rumtek Monastery administration said on the phone here. The Rumtek Monastery, the headquarters of the Karma Kagyu sect of Buddhism, which houses a number of Buddha statues and other relics, supported the offer made by the Union Government to bring the artefacts from Afghanistan to India and preserve them as treasures of the Afghan people. A report from Tirupati said BJP national President Bangaru Laxman today called for a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the destruction of ancient Buddha statues by the Taliban in Afghanistan and asked Pakistan, Saudia Arabia and the UAE to derecognise the “mafia” regime. He said the international community should condemn the “mafia” in Afghanistan. He said this during a visit to the Tirumala Lord Venkateswara Temple. A report from Delhi said Mufti Mukarram Ahmad, the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s historic Fatehpuri Jama Masjid, Maulana Waheeduddin Khan, President of the Islamic Centre, and several other Muslim intellectuals today condemned the Taliban in Afghanistan for its un-Islamic act of destroying the Buddha statues in the Central Bamiyan province.

Forts mute spectator to nature’s fury Bela (Kutch), March 4 For several families of the Jaisaji clan of the Rajputs, which had made the fort their home, its towering walls stood for centuries as a barrier to the outside forces of nature. Little did they knew that the earthquake would drift their ancestral heritage in past with misty reminder implanted on hearts. Not far way broken walls of three other forts of AliaJi, Kajhaji and Jatana Ji — all belonging to Visaji clan of the Rajputs — which might not find mention in the record of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) — stand as mute spectator to the nature’s fury. Report say several unprotected historical buildings representing the unique architectural style of the Kutch had been battered by the earthquake. On knowing about the forts, The Tribune team travelled all the way to the village and came to know of some revealing historical facts about the place. Hetu Bah Whagela (60), a respected figure in the village guides us to damaged remains of the fort of Jaisaji — one of the four sons of Visaji. As the legend goes, Visaji discovered the sacredness of the place 500 years ago and constructed four forts for his four sons. As their family swelled some moved outside the forts. In the honour of their race, the Rajputs initially refused to accept the relief material along with the other members of the communities at the camps set up by the Haryana Government. But later accepted it. Hetu Bah recalls being told by his elders that the place was earlier called Bela Pandar, a place where ships used to dock. He says a water channel existed on what was now the Rann of Kutch as the legendry Saraswati river used to flow through the area. Till early seventies trade and socialising from the across the border continued but stopped after the BSF started patrolling the Rann of Kutch along the international border with Pakistan. The prosperity withered away as the water channel dried up. |
