Anu is Miss MCM DAV

CHANDIGARH, March 4 — Ms Anu was declared as Miss MCM DAV as hostel residents of MCM DAV College Sector 36, bid farewell to the senior students at a colourful function held at the college here today. Sakshi was first runners-up and Nidhi was the second runners-up in modelling.

The theme of the function was an oriental setting and decoration. As Japanese dressed girls welcomed the guests, excitement filled the air as every resident was enthused about what was yet to come.

The function started after an impatient wait by college staff, guests and hostel residents for the chief guest, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal.

After the initial start, one group dance after another followed on the latest film numbers. Three rounds of modelling by the hostel residents were intercepted by songs, ghazals, parodies and dances. The evening ended with a powerful presentation of giddha.

Many of the hostel residents were given certificates and mementoes by the chief guest. Mr Bansal encouraged the outgoing students to do better in life and congratulated them on the success of the function.

Function of GCM-11

The annual function of the three hostels of Government College for Men, Sector 11, was held in the college here on Sunday.

The function was presided over by Mr Gyanesh Bharti, SDM (East), UT, who was given a warm welcome by the Principal, Dr SN Singla. Students presented a colourful variety programme and the chief warden, Prof J. P. Garg, highlighted the activities of the hostels in his annual report.

Nearly 100 residents of the hostels were given appreciation prizes. The three hostel wardens namely Dr Maghar Singh, Dr H.S. Dhanoa and Prof. B.P. Yadav, were also present. Sajjan Singh, president of the College Students Council, and the vice-president, Karamjit Singh, conducted the stage and thanked the audience.

Ashish awarded trophy

Ashish Jain of B.Com III of Government College, Sector 46, won the Amandeep Memorial Running Trophy for outstanding contribution as prefect of the hostel, while K.N.C. Nganba of BA II was declared best resident of the hostel at the annual function in the college hostel in Sector 15, here on Sunday.

Organised by hostel residents, Mr K.A.P. Sinha, Joint Secretary, Finance, UT, was the chief guest and gave away prizes to residents.

A colourful cultural programme was presented by residents. The Principal-cum-Chief Warden of the college, Mr D.P. Singh, welcomed the guests and requested the chief guest to give top priority to the construction of the hostel building on the college campus.

Prof Sahib Singh, warden, read out the annual report of the hostel, while Mr Lipkar Singh, president, Students Association, proposed a vote of thanks.

Parents day celebrated

CHANDIGARH, March 4 — Mata Pita Santan Divas, a unique way of celebrating Parents day according to Dev Samaj tradition was held at the Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36, here today.

Prof K.N.Pathak, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University was the chief guest on the occasion while Mr Vikas Dev, secretary, Dev Samaj, presided over the function. Mr Vikas Dev highlighted the relevance of the day specially in the modern fast changing scenario.

The Principal, Ms Satinder Dhillon, welcomed the guests. The guests included Mr D.S. Saroya, DPI (Schools), Mr Paramjit Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, Ms Satyawati, chairperson of the college, Dr Deepak Manmohan Singh, Dean, College Development Council, PU, and Mr Ashok Raj Bhandari, Controller of Examinations, PU.

The function started with a Bhajan, Sharda Bhajan mat Pita kiu, Sharda Bhav karo upkar, followed by another bhajan Ma Pyari Ma sung by Sunil Bhutrani, a lecturer in the college. The students and members of the staff expressed their gratitude towards their parents through poems and speeches.

The students and staff recalled all that their parents had done for them and narrated heart rending incidents from their lives for which they were thankful to their parents. The students also thanked the college for providing them the opportunity to express their gratitude to their parents. After this the students and staff members garlanded their parents to express their emotions.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Pathak appreciated the college’s role in celebrating Mata Pita Santan Divas in such a unique manner. The students of the college had also organised an exhibition of craft items and teaching aids.

90 cases settled

KHARAR, March 4 — As many as 90 of the 541 cases were settled in three Lok Adalats organised here yesterday.

The adalats were presided over by Mrs Neelam Arora, Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division), Mrs Harinder Sidhu, Civil Judge (Junior Division) and Mr Roshan Lal Chauhan, Civil Judge (Junior Division). A sum of Rs 23.97 lakh was distributed and majority of the cases were relating to bank loans.

While giving this information, Mr Gurdeep Singh, Assistant District Attorney, Legal Services, Ropar district, said the next adalat would be held at Ropar on March 17.

Music concert

CHANDIGARH, March 4 — A Hindustani vocal music concert was given at TTTI auditorium, Sector 26, last evening by Shivraj Shitole. Shivraj Shitole started with guru vandana and presented bandishen in Rag Darbari and Rag Bhup. He also presented bhajans in different ragas. He was accompanied by Balle Mian on harmonium and Sunil Sharma on tabla.

Shivraj Shitole trained under Gyan Saraswati Kishori Amonkar for 12 years. He also received guidance from Kishoriji’s mother, Gyan Tapaswini Mogubai Kurdiakar. Accompanied by Kishoriji in various concerts across the country, he has to his credit many classical compositions, bhajans, thumris and ghazals. A gold medalist of Urdu literature, his writings include English, Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and Brijbhasha. He has also given music as chief music director for an international documentary, Wings to Freedom. Presently, he is conducting research on music as a medicine to assist the healing of mental and physical diseases under the spiritual guidance of his father and guru, Kriyaban Yogiraj Sidhanath.

Karran enthrals audience

ZIRAKPUR, March 4 —The ‘‘Kudi Dhai Lakh Di’’ fame — Karran Jesbir — enthralled the audience in a cultural programme organised at the Connect Corporate Carnival 2001 organised by the Nexgen Entertainment and Software Limited near Zirakpur, here tonight.

Audience gathered in the Komfort Banquet on the Zirakpur-Panchkula highway danced to the tunes of his numbers. Apart from the title song of his newly released album, the artist sang some other songs including Teri Bali Koka Jhumka Nee.

While talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Karran said he gave importance to the foot taping beats in his songs beside keeping the songs for family entertainment. His new album will be in the market within next six months.

Earlier an inter-corporate competition on cricket, a quiz and antaksheri were also organised in which teams from a newspaper establishment, Spice, WWICS, Connect, IDBI Bank, ZED, SI and HDFC participated.
