State-level function on communal harmony begins

LUDHIANA, Feb 26 — A three-day state-level communal harmony festival was inaugurated at Government Senior Secondary Model School, Punjab Agricultural University, here today.

Nearly 40 Principals, heads and teachers from schools of Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar and Moga attended seminar on ‘Communal harmony and national integration’ scheduled for the day.

While reading his paper on ‘Role of school education in creating communal harmony and imparting moral values’, Mr Om Parkash Gason, a writer, said there was a need to revise the syllabi for all classes and to add a few chapters in order to promote moral education and to boost national integrity. He said that presently not much was being done at school level to eradicate caste differences. He also pointed out that the youngsters were forgetting the Indian culture and were adopting the western culture.

Dr Amarjit Singh Grewal read a paper on ‘Role of Punjabi culture in improving communal harmony and maintaining national unity’. A paper on ‘Reference of fraternity and humanity in the bani of gurus and saints’ was presented by Dr Balwinder Pal Singh.

Earlier, the festival was inaugurated by Ms Jasbir Kaur, Circle Education Officer, Nabha. In her inaugural address, the CEO said that the teachers played a vital role in inculcating moral education among the children. She said that the virtues of punctuality, sincerity and discipline can never be taught through books. The teachers themselves have to act as role models for the students while inculcating such values.

Inter-school contests for painting and poster-making, quiz and debate will be held tomorrow and those for poetry recitation and folk singing on Wednesday.

Prize distribution function

LUDHIANA, Feb 26 — The students and staff of Guru Nanak Commerce College, Field Gunj, organised the annual prize distribution function on Sunday.

The programme began with shabad kirtan, following which prizes were distributed among the five toppers of the institute.

A help book written by the Principal of the institute, Mr Gurvinder Singh Punaini, and his student, Ms Harjeet Kaur Devgun, was also released on the occasion. Mr Pritpal Singh Sethi, lecturer, G.G.N. Khalsa College, was the chief guest.

Doctor told to pay Rs one lakh

KHANNA, Feb 26 — A local doctor, Kamal Preet Kaur, of Navjeevan Nursing Home has been directed to pay Rs 1.01 lakh to Mrs Shinder Kaur, complainant, by the Ludhiana District Consumer Redressal Forum.

Mrs Shinder Kaur, a resident of Jalajan village, was admitted to the nursing home in fourth month of her pregnancy.

She complained that after the operation she developed some complications. She stated that despite her condition being unstable she was discharged. Later, she was admitted to Jeevan Joty Nursing Home where she was diagnosed a womb injury and sigmoid in rectal canal. She was then taken to Rajindera Hospital, Patiala. On October 9 she was operated again.

Mr Hakim Singh, husband of the complainant, went to the nursing home along with two persons for financial help. She stated that the doctor not only refused to help but also misbehaved with them.

The forum took cognizance of the documents submitted by the complainant which proved that she was operated upon in the nursing home of Dr Kamal Preet Kaur.

Accordingly the forum directed the doctor to pay Rs 50,000 for treatment, Rs 50,000 as compensation and Rs 1,000 as costs to the complainant.

Sports festival inaugurated

MACHHIWARA, Feb 26 — The sixth sports festival in Hambowal Bet village commenced today in the stadium of Government Senior Secondary School Mr Satpal Gosain, the Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, performed the inaugural ceremony.

He applauded the efforts of the Guru Nanak Sports Club for promoting rural sports. He announced a grant of Rs 90,000, comprising of Rs 30,000 each for the sports club, Dalit Dharamshala, and Government Primary School.

The Chairman of the club Mr Satish Malhotra expressed his gratitude to Mr Gosain and other dignitaries for gracing the occasion. Mr Gurcharan Singh Mithewal, chairman of the Market Committee, Machhiwara Mr Sushil Luthra, president of the local unit of BJP, Dr Raj Sharma, an RSS activist, Mr Harbans Lal Fanta, Councillor, Harjit Singh Shesiur, circle Jathedar of the SAD, and many others attended the inaugural ceremony.

Football trials

LUDHIANA, Feb 26 — Trials to select the senior boys’ district football team will be held on March 3 at 10 a.m. at the Guru Nanak Stadium.

Selected players will participate in the Punjab State Senior Championship to be held at Abohar from March 8 to 11. Players should report to Amritpal Singh Mavi and Jaspal Singh with their kits.
