Depicting clarity and purity of raagas

CHANDIGARH, Feb 24 — Yet another delightful performance marked the ongoing golden jubilee celebrations of the baithak programme organised by the Pracheen Kala Kendra in the city. To lend greater significance to the evening, the Kendra had invited none other than the great sitar maestro, Ustaad Sayeed Khan, who delighted the audience with his superb control over the instrument and set the mood of evening melody. His versatility is incomparable.

He began his recital with raag Yaman Kalyan. Then came another sequence in drut gat set in teen taal. This masterpiece was marked with a commendable variety of layakari, followed by an extremely fascinating aalaap, jod, jhala, meend kann and jamjama.

Flourishes of expertise at Khayaal gayaki were in evidence in the recital of Sayeed Khan at the Kendra’s Bhaskar Rao auditorium. To conclude the recital, he presented a dhun in Mishra Peelu and Kaherva teen taal, which made the audience spell bound

Belonging to the Delhi gharana, Ustaad Sayeed Khan was initiated into this art by stalwarts like Ustaad Chand Khan Saheb, Ustaad Zafar Amhad Khan and Ustaad Fayyaz Ahmed Khan.
