National seminar on ayurveda

LUDHIANA, Feb 23 — DAV Ayurvedic Research Foundation — a wing of Dayanand Ayurvedic College, Jalandhar — will organise a national seminar on “Ayurveda-Native Wisdom in Health and Medicine” on February 25 at hotel Park Plaza. Prominent speakers from different parts of the country will present their research papers in the seminar.

Dr P. K. Jain, Principal, Dayanand Ayurvedic College, Jalandhar, said that the DAV Ayurvedic Research Foundation was established with the aim to safeguard the interests of India by undertaking research in ayurveda acceptable at international level and getting its global patentisation and providing health care to the common man of the world through ayurvedic treatment.

More than 250 ayurvedic doctors from all over Punjab will participate in the seminar. Dr J. S. Gujral, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, will be the chief guest. Dr Sunil Kant Munjal and Dr C. Prakash, senior Vice-President of DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, will be the guest of honour. Mrs Geetika Kalha, Commissioner, Jalandhar Division, will be the presiding luminary on the occasion.

Inter-school declamation contest held

LUDHIANA, Feb 23 — Students from nearly 14 schools of the city participated in the inter-school declamation contest held at Sanatan Dharam Pracharak Senior Secondary School, Hazuri Road, here today.

The students were given 10 topics which included ‘Corruption — a curse in society’, ‘Drugs and youth’, ‘Hazards of pollution’, ‘A sound mind lives in a sound body’, ‘Ek arab ki jansankhaya— bhagya vardan ya abhishap’, ‘Dahej ek abhishap’, ‘ Bhagya aur pursharth chalte hain sath sath’, ‘Sarab rog ka aukhad naam’, ‘Sikhayat nari kul upkari’ and ‘Jad dulda khun shaeedan da, takdeer badaldi kauman di’.

The first prize was clinched by Anil Goel of Kundan Vidya Mandir. The second prize was shared by Vandita Jain of Jain Girls’ Senior Secondary School and Rahul of the host school. The third prize went to Samridhi Sharma of Kundan Vidya Mandir.

The judges of the contest were Ms Veena Mann and Ms Jaswinder Kaur, both lecturers, SDP College for Women, and Mr Gurpreet Rai Vij, retired lecturer of the host school.

Mr Lekh Raj Arora, President, Parent Teachers’ Association, was the chief guest on the occasion. Mr R.K. Khurana, Principal, gave away the prizes.

Principal’s action condemned

LUDHIANA, Feb 23 — The Government College Teachers’ Association has condemned the action of Principal of GGS Government College, Jandiala, for not relieving a lecturer of English for attending the orientation course to begin from February 26 at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Stating this in a press note, Mr Jaipal Singh, president of the association, said that lecturer of the Jandiala college had only the last chance to attend the course and her senior scale was due from September 1998. He alleged that the same principal had disallowed a lecturer of Punjabi from attending a refresher course in September last at Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar.

The association has also condemned the principal for creating stress and terror among the college lecturers. The members of the association have sought the assistance of higher authorities for getting the lecturer attend the orientation course and order enquiry against the undue harassment of women employees at the college.

Annual function

LUDHIANA, Feb 23 — Students and staff of the Guru Nanak Polytechnic for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, celebrated their annual function here today.

Nearly 115 students were awarded diploma certificates for the five courses, including dress designing, fashion designing, textile designing, cutting and stitching and home and decoration. Roll of honour was awarded to five students, including Kamaljit, Upasana, Manita, Mala Goel and Chander Beri. Preeti Madaan, Parminder Kaur and Navdeep Kaur were given prizes for their performance in co-curricular activities. Shikha Sood received prize for best participant in exhibition. Manita Arora was declared Ms Polytechnic.

Prize distribution function

SAHNEWAL, Feb 23 — The annual prize distribution function of Kalgidhar Academy, Dugri, near Sahnewal would be held on February 25. According to Mr R.K. Parveen, Principal, the function would be presided over by Baba Sarabjit Singh Bedi and the occasion would be graced by Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, member, Rajya Sabha, Mr Harminder Singh, former Chairman PSEB, Ms Veena Dada, Chairman OSD, Jathedar Bharpur Singh Khalsa, member, SGPC, and Mr Udham Singh Kang, Chairman, Selection Committee. The guest of honour would be Baba Hari Singh Randhawa.

49th annual athletic meet

KHANNA, Feb 23 — The 49th annual athletic meet of A.S. College Khanna started here today at the newly constructed Madan Gopal Chopra Memorial Stadium.

The meet was inaugurated by Mr Des Raj Mehta, a freedom fighter and a social worker of the area. He announced a donation of Rs 10,000/- for the development of sports in the college.

Welcoming the chief guest and other personalities, Principal Tarsem Bahia highlighted the role of Mr Mehta in the freedom struggle of the nation.

The results of the first day are as under:-

High jump — Sukhvir Singh, 3000m walk — Piyush Mehta, shot put — Gurmail Singh, 5000m race — Gurpreet Singh, 400m race (women) — Rupinder Kaur and tripple jump — Sukhvir Singh.

Lathala Sports Festival
Freedom fighter Kartar Singh Dukki and Babu Joginder Singh Memorial annual Lathala Sports Festival started here on Thursday. This is an annual feature. The festival was inaugurated by Mr Jaspal Khangura. Others present on the occasion were Mr Gurdev Lapra, secretary, Punjab Congress, Mr Manmohan Singh Nangal, Mr Raj Singh Jand and Parminder Singh Khangura.

Sport meet concludes
Prabhjot Kaur clinched the best athlete title on the last day of the annual sport meet held at the Government College for Women. The two-day meet concluded here today. Prabhjot won six gold, two silver and one bronze medal. Harwinder Kaur was declared as the best player of the college. The prize distribution function was presided over by Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, Minister of Technical Education.

The Results are: 200m: Prabhjot Kaur 1, Manpreet Kaur 2, Sabina 3; three leg race: Gagan and Gurpreet Kaur 1, Baljeet and Ikjot 2, Navjot and Kanchan 3; sack race: Gurpreet Kaur 1, Bhavna 2, Gagan 3; Javelin throw: Sandeep Kaur 1, Prabhjot Kaur 2, Gursimran Kaur 3; 100m: Prabhjot Kaur 1, Manpreet Kaur 2, Amandeep Kaur 3.
