New correspondence courses by PU

CHANDIGARH, Feb 23 — The Department of Correspondence Studies, Panjab University, is introducing courses in Bachelors of Library and Information, masters in commerce and sociology from the forthcoming session.

This was announced by Professor Ujjagar Singh, director of the department, while addressing a press conference here today.

At present the course in Library and Information is available only at Kurukshetra University which witnesses a heavy rush as it happens to be the only institute for students of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir to opt for the subject through correspondence.

Professor Singh said the course would have more classes under the personal contact programme as compared to the existing courses. The classes would be compulsory and could be taken in batches. The course would be of two-year duration.

He said that these job-oriented courses would go a long way in fulfilling aspirations of the students who could not get admissions because of financial, geographical or circumstantial reasons.

The department reaches approximately 15,000 students annually.

Annual function of school

CHANDIGARH, Feb 23 — The annual prize distribution function of Aanchal Preparatory School , Sector 35-A , was held today. While the annual function of the school’s branch at Phase XI , S.A.S Nagar , was held yesterday. Prizes for various co-curricular activities held during the session were given to the winners.

A cheque for Rs 10,000 for Gujarat Earthquake Relief fund was also handed over by the Principal to the chief guest.

Chandigarh Club cases adjourned till Feb 26

CHANDIGARH, Feb 23 — The UT Civil Judge (Senior division) today adjourned the suit for permanent injunction restraining the returning officer of the Chandigarh Club Limited to allow three persons to contest the election for the post of executive, till February 26.

The three city residents, Mr Harpreet Singh, Mr Sanjay Goel, Mr Jaswinder Singh, had filed the suit for declaration to the effect that the decision of defendant, the returning officer, Mr S.C Nagpal, with regard to allowing the defendants, Mr Inderjit Bajaj, Mr Gopal Gupta, and Mr C.M Munjal, to contest the elections was illegal, wrong, contrary to the provisions of the club.

One acquitted
The UT Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, today acquitted a resident of Ropar, in a case causing death by rash or negligent act. The case against the accused was registered under Sections 279 and 304-A of IPC on March 11, 1997.

It was alleged that the accused truck driver, Amrik Singh, had hit the two scooterists, Manjit Singh and Kehar Singh, who died on the spot. The accused was acquitted for lack of evidence.

The UT Civil Judge (Junior Division), Mr Mahinder Singh, today adjourned another case pertaining to the grant of interim injunction restraining the defendants not to hold the Chandigarh Club elections, for February 26.

Trespass in house
Joginder Singh, a resident of Sector 27, was acquitted today by the UT Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, in a case of house trespassing. The case against the accused was registered under Section 448 of the IPC on the complaint of Mr Vidhya Sehgal on January 12, 1999.

Fined under Exise Act
The UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class) today fined a city resident, Ashok, under the Excise Act. The case against the accused was registered on November 23, 2000 under Sections 61/1/14 of the Excise Act. The accused will have to pay a fine of Rs 600.

Notice of motion in jailbreak case

CHANDIGARH, Feb 23 — On an application seeking the grant of bail filed by an accused in the jailbreak case, Satnam Singh, Mr K.S. Garewal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion for March 14.

The alleged conspiracy to blow up Model Jail in Burail village was reportedly unearthed by the Chandigarh police with Satnam Singh’s arrest on June 11, 1998. According to the prosecution, PETN explosive, to be smuggled into the jail complex, was recovered from his possession. More explosive was recovered from his residence in Salimpur village in Ropar district .

The explosive, the prosecution had added, was to be employed for blowing up a portion of the jail complex. This was to enable Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s alleged assassins, Jagtar Singh Tara and Jagtar Singh Hawara, to escape.
