Home Science College fete begins

CHANDIGARH, Feb 17 — The annual fete of the Sector 10, Government Home Science College got off to a colourful start on the college campus here today. The festival expressions...Just say it!!! is being organised in collaboration with professional agencies and is a sponsored event. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr M. Ramshekhar, inaugurated this two-day fete.

Besides the usual chat and golgappa stalls, there are stalls in the fete for Chinese food, games, messages, toys, cards and balloons. The fete is attracting many college students. Many corporate houses have also put up their stalls here. The highlights of the fete are camel ride and competitions. Today, garland-marking, flower-arrangement, mehndi, rangoli and kite-flying contests were held.

An inter-college fashion show will be organised at the festival tomorrow.

Annual function of school

CHANDIGARH, Feb 17 — Satluj Public School (junior wing), Sector 2, Panchkula, celebrated its silver-jubilee annual function today. Dr Surinder Singh Hara, noted agro-forestry scientist, was the chief guest and his wife, Ms Valerie Hara the guest of honour.

About 250 students of the school performed on the stage and the others worked backstage. The function began with a welcome song by Satluj Choir. Four students — Suyash Nidhi, Chetna Sharma, Raghav Datta and Neha Arora presented the achievements reports of the school. Prizes were given to 45 students for excellent performance in academics, co-curricular activities and sport.

Mr Pritam Singh Serai, Director-Principal of the School, said students here were taught according to education theories practiced worldwide. The cultural items presented today included fashion show, Boogie-Woogie, fusion dance and colour festival. Dr Hara praised the efforts of the school in creating a rich environment for the growth of children.

Earlier the Principal of the senior wing of the school, Mr Krit Serai, welcomed parents and guest. Dr Harcharan Singh, President of the Punjab Arts Council, praised the efforts of the school in promoting culture. The others who were present included Ms Manpreet Chahal and Mr Sahajbir Singh Randhawa, both of whom had come from Canada.

Bal Niketan celebrates annual day

CHANDIGARH, Feb 17 — Bal Niketen Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37-A, Chandigarh, celebrated its annual cultural-cum-prize-distribution function in the school campus today. The students of the school presented a variety of cultural programmes.

The District Education Officer, Mr Brahamjit Kalia and Assistant Secretary, CBSE, Mr Rajbir Singh, attended the function to encourage the budding talent of the institution. Those students who had excelled in the field of academics, sports, co-curricular activities were given prizes.

The principal of the school, highlighted the achievements of the school in various fields .

In his speech, the Assistant secretary, CBSE, Mr Rajbir Singh, appreciated the performance of the students and lauded the efforts of the staff and the management.

300 take part in painting contest

SAS NAGAR, Feb 17 — An open drawing and painting competition was organised by Sherwood Convent School on its premises here today.

“About 300 students of different schools of the town and Chandigarh took part in the competition,” Ms Kusum Singla, Principal of the host school, said Mr N.S. Jolly, member of the Subject Committee of the Haryana School Education Board, was the chief guest.

The results were as follows: Group A (age below 4): Samit Singh (Sahibzada Preparatory School) 1; Vimal Sharma Sahibzada Preparatory School) 2; Isha Arora (Sherwood Convent School) 3.

Group B (age 4-6): Rohit Sharma (Paragon School) 1; Anmol Goreya (Sherwood Convent School) 2; Tavish (Saupin’s School) 3; group C (age 6-8): Yoganishi Arora (Tender Heart) 1; Sanjay (Sherwood Convent School) 2; Lokesh Kumar (Paragon School) 3.

Group D (age 8-10): Supinder Singh (Paragon School) 1; Amandeep Singh (Paragon School) 2; Jaspreet Singh (Sherwood Convent School) 3.

Prize distribution function

CHANDIGARH, Feb 17 — The State Institute of Education, Sector 32, was host to the prize distribution function of the state-level children’s festival for nursery/primary class of Chandigarh here today. More than 1055 students participated in these competitions.

Dr Tejinder Malhotra, ex-Principal, Government College of Education, Sector 20, presided over the function. She stressed the role of parents and teachers in developing the spirit of exploration among students. She added that environment plays an important role in the harmonious development of an individual.

Dr H C Sharma, Director of the institute, welcomed the chief guest. More than 219 students received prizes.

Prathibha enthrals audience

CHANDIGARH, Feb 17 — Prathibha Prahlad, a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer, performed at the Bhaskar Rao auditorium at Pracheen Kala Kendra, Sector 35, here today. The programme was organsied by the Kendra in collaboration with the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi.

The programme started with ‘Brihadeshwara’ in Raga Kaanada choreographed by Pratibha. It described the varied forms of Lord Shiva and how he drank the poison which came out of the churning of the ocean.

The next item was ‘Varnam’, a central piece of any Bharatnatyam recital. Then came ‘Rusali Radha’ in Marathi (Raag Yaman) followed by the Asthapadi in ‘Kuru Yadunandans’ in Chapu Taal (Raag Misra Kapi) was well-knit, which revealed Prathibha’s calibre.

Prathibha concluded her perfomance by presenting ‘Tillana’ which was set to Varamu Raag in Adi tala. The other artists who accompained her were K.R.V Pulakeshi on Nattuvangam, P Ramaa Keshavan on Mridangam and Anuroop on violin.
