Alok, Lilly to represent Punjab

LUDHIANA, Feb 15 — Former national champion Alok Kumar and Dharminder Lilly will represent the state in the National Billiards and Snooker Championship in Chennai. Mr R. Bhambi, general secretary, Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association, said the players left for Chennai last night after attending a 15-day training camp in Ludhiana. The Satluj Club gave Rs 10,000 to Alok Kumar.

Football trials: Trials to select the senior boys district football team will be held at the local PAU grounds on February 17. According to a press note, the team will participate in the Punjab State Senior Football Championship, to be held at Abohar from February 23 to 25.

Rural sports: The 6th Haibowal Rural Sports Festival is scheduled to be held from February 26 to 28 at Government Senior Secondary School grounds, Haibowal (bet).

According to a press note issued here today by Mr Satish Malhotra, Chairman, Guru Nanak Sports Club, kabaddi, football, athletics, dog race, volleyball, tug of war will be included in the festival. The winners would be given cash prizes. The total prize money in the tournament will be Rs 1,00,000.

College meet: The annual athletics meet of Guru Nanak National College will be held on February 16 and 17. The main events to be held are races, jumps and throws.

Athletics meet: The annual athletics meet of DAV College will be held on February 16 and 17. It will be inaugurated by the SDM, Mr Jaspal Mittal.

MACHHIWARA

Sports festival: The three-day sports festival, being organised by the Sri Charan Kanwal Sahib Sports Club, will begin at Football Stadium near Government Senior Secondary School on February 16. According to the senior vice-president of the club, Mr Jaspal Singh Judge, the events slated for the first day include football (55 kg), kabaddi (57 kg), volleyball, shooting and cards game. Events to be held on the second day are football (club) and kabaddi (62 kg), while kabaddi (club) and races will be held on the last day. The winners will be given cash prizes.

Team identifies flood prone areas

LUDHIANA, Feb 15 — With a view to locate vulnerable points on the dhusi bandh along Sutlej river in the district where damage had been caused during the last rainy season the Flood Control Committee headed by Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, conducted a special inspection today. The Deputy Commissioner reviewed the weak sites, such as seed farm Khaira bet, Mannewal, Talwandi, Rampur, Huzra and Madhepur complexes along with the officers of the drainage and revenue departments.

During inspection it was found that Khaira bet, Talwandi Rampur and Mahepur complexes were the most vulnerable sites, where flood protection works were required on priority. Officials of drainage department presented the proposals for the works to be executed before the coming rainy season to save lives and property of the villagers. The Deputy Commissioner asked the officers of drainage department to submit the complete requirement of the works on the whole stretch of the bundh in the district, so that the state headquarters could be requested to issue the required funds at the earliest. He directed the officials of the drainage department to conduct a joint inspection with ADC (Dev), SDM, Jagraon, to check the problems of Moga and Bassian Drain.

Mr Sandhu also listened to various problems of the panchayats and people of the villages along the river who met him during the inspection. He also assured the panchayats of Madhepur, Parjian Abupura that breaches in the Jassowal drain would be plugged to avoid any loss to their crops due to back flow in drain during floods.

At Madhepur the panchayat brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner the encroachment on 28 acre panchayat land by some people. On this the Deputy Commissioner directed the DDPO to remove the illegal occupants at the earliest. The Deputy Commissioner also assured to link seven villages with the nearest market committee. On the demand of villages along Jassowal drain, the Deputy Commissioner assured to issue Rs 2 lakh for the completion of the drain at the earliest. The Deputy Commissioner also informed that a sum of Rs 5 lakh had already been released for the construction of bridge over the drain near village Abuwal. Mr Sandhu also asked the ADC (D) to complete the loan forms of the residents of Madhepur village who wanted to apply for loans. He also listened to the problems of the people of Kania Husani, Parjian and Biharpur village, who requested the Deputy Commissioner to appoint teacher in the schools.

Surprise checks by vigilance officials

LUDHIANA, Feb 15 — A team of vigilance officials of the Medical Department conducted surprise checks in the Civil Surgeon’s office and the Civil Hospital here yesterday. The checks continued till late last night. The Civil Surgeon, Mrs Rajinder Kaur, said it was the routine check and everything was found in order.

The team led by Dr Rajesh Jindal had arrived from Chandigarh to conduct checks.
