Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Jan 28 — For Keralites based in the city and its vicinity, it was an occasion worth remembering. As the community celebrated its annual day on the premises of the Government Polytechnic for Women in Sector 10 here today, one got an opportunity to view some great talent. Most of the cultural functions were in the Malayalam language. In fact, as informed by the organisers, the day marked the celebrations of Christmas and New Year for the Keralites.

The programme began with a group dance on a Malayalam song by two young girls — Anju Satyan and Arathi Suryia — which was well-received by the 15,000-strong audience. Yet another dance sequence came from Arunima and Savita who had also chosen a song in Malayalam.

The main attraction of the day, however, was the Symphony orchestra group, which had especially been invited to perform on today's function by the Kerala Samajam. The group doled out Malayalam numbers from hit films, and mostly sang on request from the audience.

The most important part of the function was the ceremony to honour children who had managed an outstanding academic performance in the Class X and XII examinations. The cash prizes comprised Rs 1,000, Rs 750 and Rs 500 for the first, second and third positions, respectively.
