Eye hospital inaugurated

DORAHA, Jan 27 — Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister, Punjab, inaugurated an eye hospital at village Kaddon, near Doraha on Thursday.

Mr Gurdev Singh Mundi, a resident of the village and at present an NRI, donated Rs 5 lakh for the construction of the building of the hospital. Mr Mundi also declared that he would donate Rs 3 lakh yearly for the further development of the hospital.

Capt Kawaljit Singh, appreciating the sincere efforts being made by Mr Mundi, said that such people are a real asset to the nation. “They are the people who even while living on foreign lands, love to see their land prosper.” We shall strive to provide more and more facilities to the NRI’s who show such dedication for their motherland.” Finance Minister said. He gave Rs 5 lakh to the hospital.

A team of doctors lad by renowned eye surgeon ,Mr A.S. Nagpal, undertook a five-day camp here. The institute, unique of its kind in the whole area, said Mr Nagpal, would provide free eye service and care with the modern machines and techniques provided at par with the PGI at Chandigarh.”

Apart from others, the occasion was graced by Mr Jagjiwan Pal Singh Gill, President, District Committee Akali Dal, Jathedar Dya Singh, General Secretary, Youth Akali Dal, Mr Sikander Singh, Chairman, Market Committee and Mr Jasvir Singh, an Akali leader.

MC drive against octroi evasion

LUDHIANA, Jan 27 — During an intensive drive against octroi evasion launched by the Municipal Corporation here, the enforcement staff has detected several cases of evasion on octroi on goods like cargo packets, electronics, medicines and audio cassettes. and have recovered Rs 1,21,415 as octroi and composition fee.

Giving this information, the MC Commissioner, Dr S.S. Sandhu, said that all the civic body officials, whether posted in the octroi department or not, have been directed to conduct surprise checks of vehicles and premises to arrest octroi evasion. He said the MC was in the process of preparing a list of habitual octroi evaders in the city so that a strict vigil could be maintained on the movement of goods.
