Basic research in drugs stressed
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Jan 27 — India must start basic and clinical research, so that new drugs are discovered in India rather than copying the molecules made abroad. This was suggested by Dr A. Sankaranarayanan of Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Ahmedabad, while discussing the impact of the Patent Act and GATT agreement on the Indian pharmaceutical Industry on the last day of the national workshop on “Drugs and Patent Act.” In a lecture on “Statistical issues in clinical trials”, yesterday he pointed out that statistical issues are important for clinical trials, design of a trial, randomisation and in the final analysis.

Dr Bobby George from Dabur Research, Delhi, gave a lecture on Pharmacoeconomics. Dr Samir Malhotra spoke about ethical and legal issues in clinical trials, Dr M.C. Gupta, Associate Professor from Rohtak in his talk on “Drug Information Unit”, outlined the basic necessities for setting up a drug information unit.

Dr (Mrs) R. Uppla in her lecture on Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) stressed the need for documentation of the laboratory procedure.

Dr (Mrs) M. L. Dave of Rhone - Poulenc, Mumbai, said by avoiding bias in clinical trials gives credence to the results.
