Pull of roots draws artiste to Punjab
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Jan 27 — An artiste based in Canada is repeatedly drawn to his roots in Punjab. The artiste is Vancouver-based Amanpal Sara.

The journey from the foreign lands to the roots becomes striking in times when artistes carrying “pigeons” to foreign lands has become an in thing.

Sara, a writer and a performer is in the city. He had a 100 day shooting schedule of guldasta ( a Hindi film) at Dalhousie. Sara skidded on the snow and fractured his leg.

Sara showed a cassette of a film which he had shot in 1992 with Rama Vij in the lead. There was just Doordarshan then and “I had no links or advertisers. So I just took the print back”, he said.

Sara has been in Vacouver for the past 23 years. But happenings back home, especially the decade long terrorism, stir him. He started as a poet. Later joined a theatre group and has done 20 plays in the past decade.

Despite being in a government job, he manages to tour North America.

Sara is an alumnus of the famed Vancouver Film School.

“I am a little fussy about scripts. I can not digest the portrayal of Sikhs as taxi drivers or comic characters. They are in 124 countries. Their character needs far more responsible presentation”, he said.

Guldasta is being directed by Baljeet Raina. Prominent among the cast include Sara, Jonita Doda ( a reputed model), Kewal Dhaliwal, Aazad Sara, Guntas Kumar Raina and Shari Boyle among others.

An army officer is injured during an encounter with terrorists in Kashmir . He falls in love with a nurse in a military hospital and goes down the memory lane including his affair with a Kashmiri maiden. Sara expects the film to be completed in February.
