Live demo of handicraft making by artisans

LUDHIANA, Dec 30 — Lacquered wooden furniture from Sankheda, floorspreads woven with camel and goat hair from Kutch, toran with beadwork for doorways, ethnic tribal jewellery, bangle boxes of guilded brass, terracotta creations from Botad and Kanjri villages of Gujarat, chowkies, boxes and table tops adorned with traditional marquery work of Surat and an array of other antique pieces that can add elegance to contemporary interiors are at display in the Gujarati and Haryanvi handicrafts exhibitions being organised separately at the Mall and Bhai Bala Chowk by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

The best part of the two exhibitions is the demonstration of the art of making handicrafts by artisans from rural parts of Gujarat and Haryana with an antique touch. A number of these artists have also come here to attend the exhibition in the city.

The main attraction of the Gurjari exhibition is the wooden furniture of Sankheda, with lacquer application. The furniture includes, sofa sets with centre tables, side tables, rocking chairs and swinging chairs. Carved wooden figures are another attraction at the exhibition. Traditional jewellery, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets and anklets in white as well as black metal with colourful beads, shells and mirrors is also on display.

Amar Singh, an artisan, is giving a live demonstration of making wall hangings, vanity cases, ash trays and carved pots in brass and copper. Colourful chandeliers, puppets and embroidered door hangings decorated with silver and golden ribbons, bells, mirrors, beads and shells are also being made by the artisans at the exhibition.

Hand-woven shawls, embroidered and painted cotton as well as silk shirts, dupatta suits, cushion covers, bed covers, quilts, durries and table linen have also been displayed. Slip pad covers, wallets and file folders embroidered in different patterns have also been displayed.

Terracota pots, lamp shades, wall hangings and lanterns of different shapes and sizes are the main attractions of the exhibition of Haryanvi handicrafts at Bhai Bala Chowk. Carved and painted tea sets, lemon sets, bear mugs, dry fruit trays, planters, jugs, serving trays and bowls made of brass and copper are other attractions.

Baskets, mudhas, serving trays, hats, caps, pen stands, flower vase, serving bowls, tea strainers and planters made of cane and bamboo have been exhibited. Besides, napkins, table cloth, cushion covers, stocking bags, hand bags, aprons, fruit bags, shoe racks, oven gloves in different patch patterns are on display. Hand woven mattresses, foot mats, bath mats and kitchen towels are also on display.

Udit to perform in city

LUDHIANA, Dec 30 — A The Sutlej Club will celebrate New Year Eve with the playback singer Udit Narayan and his son Aditya Narayan. According to Mr A .S. Chawla, general secretary of the club, the Narayans would be accompanied by actress Shweta Menon, ramp queen Swareena and famous anchor Shakil Ansari. The club management has arranged a separate dance floor for couples. He added that there would be two to three entry gates for convenience of members to avoid any unprecedented rush.

Football tourney

LUDHIANA, Dec 30 — Football Club, Rurkan Kalan (Jalandhar), defeated Heera Club (PAU), 3-0 in the opening match of eighth Nirupjeet Kaur Gill Memorial Football Tournament. This tournament is organised by the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sports and Cultural Club, Ludhiana.

The first two goals were scored by Rajeev Rattan. In the second half, Kulwant Singh scored the third goal.

In second match, Football Club, Kharar, defeated Khalsa College, Ludhiana, in a one-sided match by 4-0. Before the breather, centre forward, Jagtar Singh, and left out, Avneet Sandhu, scored a goal each to made the tally 2-0. After the lemon break Jagtar and Avneet again scored a goal each.

In third match, District Police, Batala, defeated Football Club, Noorpur Bait, in a one sided match by 4-0.

Mr Apinder Singh Grewal, Mayor, Ludhiana Municipal Corporation said, “It is very necessary to promote sports culture to save the new generation from the menace of drugs.” He presided over the inaugural function.
