All set for PU convocation

CHANDIGARH, Dec 26 — Panjab University is all set to hold its 50th Convocation tomorrow. The Chancellor and the Vice-President of university Mr Krishan Kant, will be presiding over the ceremony while Dr Jagdish Bhagvati, a leading economist of the country, will also be present at the occasion.A total of 389 students have been listed for the award of degree and medals. About 55 doctorate degrees will be awarded in the sciences, 25 in the arts, 35 in languages,19 in education,11 in Commerce,4 in pharmacy, 4 in design and fine arts, and 1 in laws. Two people will be awarded the M.Ed degree two MS and five MD’s. The Law auditorium stage will be seating the Chancellor, the Vice- Chancellor, the deans and the fellows in accordance with the seating ordnance. Students were called today for the rehearsal of the ceremony while the police were doing the last minute security arrangements. Government College for Girls, Sector 42, seems to be the only college in the city, six of whose faculty members are being awarded the PhD degrees at the convocation tomorrow. These are Ms Amarjit Kaur in Home Science, Ms Jyoti Seth on Sociology, Mr Gurdev Singh in Punjabi, Ms Poonam Aggarwal in Commerce, Ms Mamta Malhotra in Commerce and Ms Bikramjit Kaur in Commerce. Ms Bikramjit and Ms Mamta are serving as guest faculty lecturers in the college while the others are regular. “I am very proud of these lecturers and for me it is a rainbow with another of our lecturers, Mr Amar Singh, getting a PhD from Himachal University,” says the Principal Ms Mohini Sharma.
