Neha bags second title

CHANDIGARH, Dec 20 — Neha Singh won her second title today in under-14 section of the Chandigarh Scholarship Tennis Tournament, which concluded here today at Lake Club courts. She like defeated her sister Simmer, 6-2,6-2.

In the boys under-14 section, Ardaman Sidhu defeated Yuvraj Chaudhary, 6-2,6-2, while Jitin Bishnoi bagged the under-18 title by defeating Anup Anand, 6-3, 6-4. Uday Karan was able to clinch under-10 title by defeating Shiva Sangwan, 7-5, 6-1. Janmeet and Amanjot won the men's double title when they toppled Vikas and Gursewak, 6-4,6-0.

Neha Singh a CLTA trainee, has this year created many upsets at various AITA ranking tournaments, the prominent players whom she had beaten include, Priyanka Parikh, Tara Iyer, Kartiki and Fatima Beg, all among top five in the India junior section.

Neha, who now ranks 16th as per latest AITA ranking is a Class X student of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26.

Mr Kailash Nath, general manager, CLTA, gave away the prizes.

Badminton tournament
The MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, and the Government College for Girls, Sector 11, surged ahead with identical wins (2-0) over Panjab University Campus and the SD College for Women, Moga, in the Panjab University Inter-Zonal Badminton Tournament for men and women played here at the University Gymnasium Hall.

In the men section, DAV College, Chandigarh, defeated DM College, Moga, 3-0, while Government College, Ludhiana, defeated Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, 3-1.

Powerlifting team
A 12- member UT powerlifting junior men team has been selected by the Chandigarh Powerlifting Association to take part in the XXII Junior National Men and Women Powerlifting Championships to be held at Ranchi from December 23 to 27.

The team is: Iqbal Singh, Ravinder Singh, Paramjit Singh, Hussan Lal (Captain), Gurjinder Singh, Paramjit Singh, Jatinder Singh, Devinder Singh, Harichand, Baljinder Singh, Surinder Singh, Kamaldeep Singh and Mandeep Singh. Rajpal Singh and H.S. Bansal will accompany the team as coach and manager, respectively.

Karate meet
The Amateur Karate Association of Chandigarh has selected the following players for the 3rd International Karate Championship to be held at Pune from December 24 to 27 and being organised by the Maharashtra Shoto Ryu Karate Association. The team is: Vishal Sharma and Ankur (SNS-22), Tarun (GMHS-36) and Chander Bagga.

Girls: Anuradha Randhwa (GMSSS-21), Punita (GGSSS-23), Anita (GGSSS-22), Amanpreet Kaur ( SNBS-22) and Sandeep Kaur (MDAV-22).

Inter-circle cricket
Amritsar circle defeated Chandigarh circle by six wickets in the 12th All India Punjab and Sind Bank Inter-Circle Cricket Tournament played here at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16.

Brief scores: Chandigarh circle — 158 for nine (DM Uppal 34, Anoop Chawla 25, Trilok 4 for 17); Amritsar circle — Navtej Singh 70, Raj Kumar 20, Kittu 19). Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by Mr Gurvinderjit Singh Sandhu, IAS.

Kalagram’s admn block inaugurated

CHANDIGARH, Dec 20 — The Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), today inaugurated the administrative block of Kalagram, a novel project of the North Zone Cultural Centre. On this occasion, General Jacob also launched the website of Kalagram, which is coming up on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway.

The Governor also released of the book, Dalit And Women In Indian History. The book has been edited by Mr Chaman Lal and published by the NZCC.

Also present on the occasion was Ms Neeru Nanda, Chairperson, Chandigarh Housing Board, who took the Governor around the area to apprise him of the progress. The administrative block, six units of dormitory, toilet blocks, ticketing and inquiry counter, pump house and the generator room had been completed by the CHB and handed over to the NZCC. The work on the open air theatre with green room kiosks and a toilet block has been completed.

Ms Nanda also informed that road work and a storm water drainage system of the project had also been completed. She added that while the open air restaurant was complete, the multi-purpose hall and the rooftop restaurant would be completed by the end of March.

Further apprising the Governor of the progress, the Home Secretary and Secretary, Culture, UT, Mr R.S. Gujral, said that a slow carriage way had been constructed along the Chandigarh-Shimla highway to ease traffic and the advice of the Architecture Department had also been sought to have a permanent solution to the parking problem.

General Jacob said that the project would hopefully be completed by the end of March.
