CHANDIGARH, Dec 14 — To protest against the “callous attitude of the hospital administration”, senior residents of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, will proceed on a mass casual leave tomorrow.

The doctors alleged that one of the senior residents of the Department of Surgery was given a termination order without establishing any charges through an inquiry against him.

According to the doctors, a negotiation with the Director-Principal, Prof S.B.S. Mann, to give the doctor, whose services were terminated, to be given a fair hearing, had failed.

Rowing yet to pick up in Malaysia: Ghani
By Arvind Katyal

CHANDIGARH, Dec 14— “In Malaysia rowing is still at an infant stage and we are concentrating more on our juniors”, said Mr Abdul Malik Bin Haji Abdul Ghani, president of the Malaysian Rowing Association who is in the city to attend the Asian Rowing Congress scheduled to be held on December 16.

Mr Ghani, who has come to Chandigarh along with two umpires, said he would suggest that the Asian junior meet should be made an annual feature. Mr Ghani said their rowers did not turn up since Ramzan clashed with the championship. Another point which he proposals to raise at the Congress is organising the Asian meet before December in order to have more participation. He said in their country, they had only one six-lane rowing course conforming to international standards at Kuala Lumpur while at other places makeshift arrangements are made. Mr Abdul Ghani, who is Director Sports in the University of Technology, Malaysia, at Kuala Lumpur revealed that in their country they organised competitions at three levels — state, university and club level. At present, three kinds of tournaments are being held — nationals (for seniors and juniors) and inter-varsity meets. He said in their country at the school level they did not encourage rowing competitions because the normal age for rowing in their country was 14 plus. He said emphasis was generally laid on height since it helped a rower in gaining better control in rotating.

Mr Ghani said apart from national and Asian meets, they also send their teams for the South East Asian Rowing Meet where teams from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam and Malaysia complete. The meet will be held in 2001 in Malaysia.

Referring to financial support to the rowers, Mr Ghani said priority was accorded to football, squash and badminton but government aid for rowing was being extended. He said at the beginning of the year, they chalked out the programme for competitions and got financial support. He said the corporate sector was still not giving much support to rowing.

On the question of coaches in Malaysia, he said that at present they had six level III rowing coaches but more coaches to train the youngsters were needed.

When asked about the supremacy of Chinese rowers he said it was due to government support but in Malaysia the rowers had to depend on the associations. He said next year the Malaysian team would certainly take part in the VIIth Asian Junior Rowing Meet to be held in China. He was all praise for the Sukhna Lake course and hoped that more youngsters would take to rowing.
