PUNJAB

DORAHA
CAMP: A special pulse polio camp was organised at Doraha under the Pulse Polio Evaluation Campaign, Khanna. The camp was inaugurated by Dr R.N. Dhoke, SSP, Khanna. Mr B.S. Sidhu, DSP, Payal, was honoured with a special pulse polio award. 

INJURED: One person was injured in a freak road accident. Mr Karamjit Singh of Jaipura village was going on his scooter when a stray cow suddenly obstructed his way. Mr Karamjit lost control of his scooter and fell down, sustaining serious injuries. He was admitted to the hospital by the first aid team, Doraha. 

GARHSHANKAR
YOUTH FESTIVAL: A two-day festival of high and higher secondary schools of Hoshiarpur district concluded at the Senior Secondary School here on Friday. Mr D.P. Gupta, SDM, gave away prizes to the winners of various events. The SHVM, Talwara, GSSS, Megowal, and GGSSS, Railway Mandi, won the first prizes in Shabad, declamation and poem, poetical symposium and painting, respectively.

GURDASPUR
ARRESTED: The police arrested Pritam Singh, a proclaimed offender, in a cheating case, absconding since January 16, 1996. Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, said a case under Sections 420/467/468/471 and 120-B of the IPC was registered against the accused on June 9, 1991. Pritam Singh allegedly duped several persons of lakhs of rupees on the plea of sending them abroad.

IMPOSTER HELD: The police has arrested Raj Kumar for posing as a DSP of the CBI. Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, in a press note issued here on Saturday said a fake identity card was recovered from his possession. His four accomplices Ramesh Kumar and Surinder Kumar of Pathankot, Kimat Lal of Sujanpur and Makhan Singh of Dhariwal, had also been arrested.

HOSPITALS: Dr Baldev Raj Chawla, Health Minister, addressing a gathering at Gharota, 22 km from here, on Friday said 10 ultra-modern hospitals with super-speciality would be constructed in Punjab in the near future under the Punjab Health System Corporation. The World Bank had given an aid of Rs 422 crore in this regard.

KAPURTHALA
SENTENCED: Mr Jagroop Singh Mahal, Additional Sessions-cum-Special Judge, on Friday sentenced Kulwant Kaur of Sunra Rajputan village to ten years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the charge of possessing 10 kg of poppy husk.

FOUR ARRESTED: The Dhilwan police has arrested Gurdev Singh alias Kalu and three other persons on the charge of beating to death Ranjit Kaur alias Rani, wife of Gurdev Singh. According to press note issued here on Friday, Mr Iqbal Singh, SSP, said on October 27 Gurdev Singh along with three others beat up his wife Rani and caused serious injuries to her. She later succumbed to her injuries on October 30. They allegedly cremated Rani without informing her parents.

KHANNA 
BOOK RELEASED: A book, 'Health For All, Homoeopathy For Happy and Healthy Life' written by a local homoeopath, Dr S.S. Vithal, will be released by the Vice-President of India, Mr Krishan Kant, during the 18th National Homeopathic Congress of the Indian Institute of Homoeopathic Physicians (Regd). The function will be held from November 17 to November 19 at Chinmaya Auditorium in Delhi. 

LUDHIANA
CONTEST: The Ludhiana district branch of Indian Academy of Pediatrics is organising a Healthy Baby Contest on Sunday, November 12, 2000 at Lions Bhavan, Udham Singh Nagar according to Dr Rajinder Gulati, secretary of the branch. Dr Gulati said that the judges would be pediatricians and selection would be done according to the criteria laid down by the central body of Indian Academy of Pediatrics i.e physical growth, mental growth, vaccination, hygiene and mother/parent knowledge about child care. Children under the age of 5 years as on November 12, 2000 will be divided into 5 groups. Three prizes will be given in each group. Dr Surinder Likhi, president of the branch added that a mega prize of Rs 2100 would be given to the millennium baby of IAP, Ludhiana. Free vaccination consultation would be given to mothers. Fresh registration will be open for mothers who could not register for the contest earlier. 

Child care competition: In the interschool Child Care poster competition organised by Indian academy of Pediatrics, Ludhiana District Branch, on November 4, Mr Akhil Sachdeva of Sacred Heart Convent School stood first, Rupanjeet Kaur of Kundan Vidya Mandir came second and Rajeev Chaudhary of DAV Public School was third. Consolation prize was won by Parul and Arunima of Guru Nanak Public School and Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School respectively. According to Dr Sukhmeet Sethi, scientific secretary of the branch, the winners of poster competition will be honoured at Lions Bhawan on Sunday at 3 p.m. 

HAILED: The Bairagi Maha Mandal, Punjab, has hailed the appointment of Mr Nityanand Swami as Chief Minister of Uttaranchal. Mr Krishan Kumar Bawa, president of the mandal, said that it was for the first time that a bairagi had attained such an exalted position in an Indian state. The appointment, he added, was celebrated with distribution of sweets in different parts of the state by bairagi community. 

Free medical camp: The Lal Bahadur Shastri Social Forum will organise a free medical check-up and brain diseases detection camp on Sunday at Shri Anant Prem Ashram, Indra Nagar, Abdullapur Basti, here to mark the 90th birth anniversary of Dr Kali Charan Sharma. Mrs Anita Darshi, Assistant Commissioner (Grievances), will inaugurate the camp, while Mr Gurcharan Singh Ghalib, MP, will be the chief guest. 

Tulsi vivah: Shri Gyan Sthal Temple in association with Shri Krishan Temple, Naya Mohalla, organised ‘Tulsi Vivah’ at the temple. A colourful procession was taken out in the city in which various tableaus with elephants and horses were decorated and a live band had been organised which presented ‘Bhakti’ tunes for the devotees. The guests of honour on the occasion were Mr Sunil Mehra, Mrs Asha Sharma and Mr Sham Shunder Malhotra. Amongst Mr Jagdish Bajaj, Mr Sanjay Gupta, Mr Chamanlal Kapoor, Mr Raj Kumar Jindal, Mr Roshan Lal Goel, Mr Vinod Bharti and Mr Naresh Goel. 

Fellowship: Dr Devinder Singh Cheema, vegetable botanist, Department of Vegetable Crops, Panjab Agricultural University, has been awarded a fellowship by the Government of Netherlands to attend a refresher course on new developments in protected cultivation of vegetables under glass and plastic. The refresher course is being organised jointly for two weeks by the International Agriculture Center at Wageningen in Netherlands and Institute of Vegetables and Flowers of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences at Beijing in China. 

MANSA
WARRANT ISSUED: Ms Poonam Ratti, PCS, Civil Judge, Bathinda, has issued a warrant for the attachment of the official vehicle of the District Education Officer (S) on an execution application filed by Mr K.K. Jindal, a former employee of the District Education Office (Secondary) here. Besides it, the office furniture of Government Senior Secondary School of Sada Singh Wala Village has also been attached.

NAWANSHAHR
BLOOD DONATION CAMP: The local Blood donors Council organised a blood donation camp at ITI Garhshankar, about 12 km from here, on Friday. Mr Dharampal Gupta, SDM, inaugurated the camp. As many as 31 units of blood were collected.

ONE KILLED: Pawan Kumar of local Dana Mandi was killed when his scooter collided with a truck here on the Chandigarh road on Friday. The driver fled the scene after the accident. A case has been registered.

PHAGWARA
MAGIC SHOW: A magic show was performed by National Magic Awardee Samrat Shankar here on Friday. He reportedly plied a motorcycle, with his eyes blindfolded through markets of Hargobind Nagar, Gandhi Chowk, GT Road and several other busy localities. He also performed several other magical feats.

PHILLAUR
COURSE ORGANISED: A three-day specialised course on office procedures, accounts matters and powers of DDOs for GOs was organised at the Punjab Police Academy here on Friday. Twenty police officers from various districts participated in the course. It was inaugurated by Mr Chander Shekher, IG.

MAGIC SHOW: The heart to heart service society of the Innerwheel Club of Chandigarh will be organising a hour long magic show in the auditorium of the Advanced Paediatric Centre (APC) on the occasion of Children’s Day. Popular magician, Pradeep, will be performing a variety of tricks for the children. Later, fruits, biscuits and juice will be distributed to all the children admitted in the hospital. The endeavour of the society, which has been formed by Munisha Gandhi, Alka Gupta and Ruchika Majithia, is to bring some joy to these not so fortunate children. The idea behind organising such activities is to bring a note of cheer and some fun in the midst of all trauma and hardships faced by them while undergoing treatment there. They have recently set up a playroom in the OPD filled with toys, games and swings. 

Performance by pop singer: Punjabi pop singer Jazzy Bains will perform at Aerizonna on Sunday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., according to the owner of the disco. 

SEMINAR: A seminar on ‘Making the Magnetic Personality’ was organised by the Chandigarh Management Association in collaboration with University Business School, Panjab University. Speaking at the occasion, Ms B.K. Kavita of Raj Yoga Bhavan Meditation Centre, Chandigarh, said that negative and toxic thoughts should be avoided to work hard and have better concentration of mind. She compared human personality with an iceberg, where visibility is only 10 per cent. Ms Kavita argued a case for introspection with self. 

FREE CAMP: More than 300 patients were examined and free medicines were distributed at a free medical check-up and treatment camp was held in Maloya by Siddharth Smriti Manav Seva Shivir and Sewa Bharti, here on Saturday. The camp was devoted to the memory of Sidharth on his first death anniversary. This was stated by Mr M.R. Mittal, President of the Sewa Bharti, in a press release. 

Memorandum submitted: A delegation of Mohalla Sudhar Samriti, Sector 30, led by the BJP leader and former Mayor, Mr Gian Chand Gupta, met the Lt-Gel (retd) J.F.R. Jacob, the UT Administrator, here on Saturday. They submitted a memorandum for the regularisation of additional room constructed within the allotted area as the family size has increased. This was stated by Mr Narendra K. Pandey, President of the Samiti. 

POLL: As many as 28 delegates of local unit of the Congress Committee will caste their votes to elect the President of the All-India Congress Committee tomorrow at the Congress Bhavan, Sector 35C. The polling will start at 10 a.m. and will close at 5 p.m. The polling will be supervised by Mr Harikesh Bahadur, Chairman, Chandigarh Pradesh Election Authority. Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, MP, and Mr Venod Sharma, former Union Minister, will be prominent among the delegates casting their ballot.

FATEHABAD
FANCY DRESS COMPETITION: The District Council for Child Welfare organised a fancy dress and quiz competition for schoolchildren in the local Bal Bhavan on Friday. Raman of Rama Krishana School got first prize in group I in the fancy dress competition, while Vanshika and Sahitya of Daya Ram School and Blue Bird School got the second and third prizes, respectively.

HISAR
THEFT: About 1500 metres of copper wire worth Rs 50,000 was stolen from the Barwala power sub-station of the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam on Thursday. On a complaint of the Subdivisional Officer (SDO), the police has registered a case against certain persons. No arrest has been made so far.

CHARAS SEIZED: The Jail authorities, on a tip-off, seized 5 gm of charas from Ishwar Singh, an inmate of the Central Jail, on Thursday. A case has been registered.

BOOKED: The police has booked Pappu for obstructing a Subdivisional Officer of the Irrigation Department from discharging his duties. The Officer had allegedly caught him stealing the canal water.

SONEPAT
KARTIKA PURNIMA: Thousands of people took holy dip in the Yamuna on the occasion of Kartika Purnima near here on Saturday. Many devotees alleged that the Haryana Roadways failed to ply additional buses for their transportation and they had to pay hefty charges to private vehicle owners.

BURN INJURIES: A young housewife sustained burn injuries when she accidentally touched electric wires in her house on the premises of the Fazilpur power house, about 3 km from here, on Friday evening. She has been admitted to the Civil Hospital.

DEMONSTRATION: Safai workers staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Municipal Council here on Friday in support of their 23-point charter of demands.

COLONY CONSTRUCTED: The Haryana Irrigation Department has constructed a office-cum-residential colony at a cost of over Rs 5 crore on the Sonepat-Rathdhanna road in the city. According to official sources, the Chief Minister will inaugurate it on November 19.

THEFT: Thieves broke into a house in the Delhi Camp area here on Friday night and allegedly decamped with goods and other valuable items worth Rs 50,000.

ONE INJURED: One person was seriously injured in a clash between two groups over canal water at Bakhtawarpur village, about 15 km from here, on Friday night. The injured has been admitted to the local Civil Hospital. His condition is stated to be out of danger.

STUDENT INJURED: A student of class VII was injured when he fell from a bus at Rattangarh village, about 10 km from here, on Friday. He has been admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

WRESTLING TEAM: The District Wrestling Association will select the senior wrestling team at Subhash Stadium here on November 13. The team will participate in the state-level wrestling championship to be held at Jind.

YAMUNANAGAR
BAL MELA: A four-day Bal Mela commenced here on Friday. It is organised every year to give cultural education to children. Mr Rajeev Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated it. A cycle race was organised on the occasion in which Bhuraika of Sacred Heart Convent School, Uday of DAV Public School and Abhay of SD Public School, Jagadhri Workshop, came first, second and third, respectively.

CHARAS SEIZED: The police arrested Ram Chand of Bagani village and seized about 1 kg of charas from his possession at Patlikuhal, 20 km from here, on Thursday. A case under Section 20 of the NDPS Act has been registered.
