100 lakh tonne paddy storage on cards
From Our Correspondent

JAWALAMUKHI, Oct 25 — Union Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution System Shanta Kumar declared that prices of consumer goods would be kept under control to safeguard interests of people, especially the poorer sections.

He said that he was paying greater attention to the poor largely dependent on the public distribution system (PDS). “Timely availability of quality consumer goods at cheaper rates will always be my priority”, he said. He said he would meet Prime Minister Vajpayee soon with feedback from the ministry to prepare an action plan for strengthening and plugging loose ends in the PDS. The minister stated this after inaugurating expansion of telephone exchange at Bathalthore in Dehra tehsil of Kangra district.

Mr Shanta Kumar said storage of foodgrains would be doubled this year. He said 4000 places were being identified in the country for creating storage facility. These would be open to the private sector and store 100 lakh tonnes of paddy, lying in the open due to lack of storage facility.

Telephone connections in Himachal will be available on demand from March 2001. He said the Centre was providing facilities for telephones in rural areas. Services were being improved in villages in Kangra and Chamba district, behind 100 persons there is only one telephone and the Centre wants to ensure at least 10 telephones per 100 persons by 2005, he added. He said the all interior areas of Chamba were being linked with telephones, adding that the “Chhota Bhangal” area of Kangra district would also have telephone facility soon.

Mohinder’s advice to Sukh Ram
From Our Correspondent

MANDI, Oct 25 — Himachal Pradesh Public Works Minister, Mr Mohinder Singh, who has formed his breakaway Himachal Vikas Party, advised HVC supremo Sukh Ram to refrain from advising the Chief Minister “to oust me” from the Council of Ministers as it was the prerogative of the Chief Minister to constitute a council of ministers of his choice. “I am no more a member of his party and he has no right to make any comment about my status,” he said.

Talking to mediapersons at the local circuit house, Mr Singh advised the HVC supremo to set his own house in order. Handing over a photocopy to newspersons containing a signed declaration by 15 leaders of Tungal valley, the constituency of Mr Sukh Ram, stating that they had left the HVC and joined Himachal Vikas Party, the PWD Minister said HVC was disintegrating. He claimed that HVC workers were demoralised as they felt they were in a sinking ship.

He said it was ironical that a person involved in various scams was casting aspersions on others. Expressing faith in the law he hoped that the guilty would not be spared by the courts and added that the conviction of the former Prime Minister should be an eye-opener to those who believe that they were above the law.

He said Mr Sukh Ram’s HVC would be confined to a “father-son” party as people had become disillusioned with him.

Make blood donation way of life: Shastri
Tribune News Service

SHIMLA, Oct 25 — Mr Vishnu Kant Shastri, Himachal Governor, has called upon the people to make voluntary blood donation a way of life as it would help save precious human lives and reduce the dependence on professional donors.

Inaugurating a blood donation camp organised by the Shimla press club in the memory Mr Kapil Sharma, a young journalist who died seven years ago here today, he said in big cities blood donation on payment was a common feature through it amounted to exploiting the needy patients. He said professional donors, who had been “selling” blood might have their own compulsions, but this practice must be discouraged. The biggest danger was that professional donors could pass on infectious diseases to patients.

Mr Shastri urged the media to dispel misgivings regarding blood donation and help make voluntary blood donation a people’s movement. He said it was a matter of great satisfaction that there was not a single professional donor in Himachal Pradesh.

Mr Balram Sharma, Director Public Relations, said press could play an important role in encouraging voluntary blood donation.

Mr P.N. Sharma, president of the club said, blood donation was equivalent to saving a life. Mr Shashikant Sharma, Secretary, said that Mr Kapil Sharma was a social activist who inspired his colleagues to work for social causes. As many as 52 persons donated blood in the camp.Top
