Ramgarhia girls win quiz contest

LUDHIANA, Oct 24 — Students from 27 schools of Ludhiana east participated in the inter-school science quiz and chart-making contests organised by the District Education Department at Shree Atma Nand Jain Senior Secondary School here yesterday.

In the chart-making contest, 54 students of Class VI to Class X, two each from 27 schools, took part. The students were told to draw diagrams on either of the six topics namely animal cell, human heart, external combustion engine, human eye, biogas plant and nuclear reactor.

In the quiz contest, students from 14 schools took part, each representing one team of two students. There were six rounds in all, two for biology, two for physics and two for chemistry. The first prize was clinched by the team of Shivali Garg and Kuldeep from Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School. The team of Jaswinder and Sunil from Ramgarhia Boys Senior Secondary School was declared second and the third prize went to the team of Pardeep and Jasdeep from Government Girls High School. Consolation prize was given to Sukhpreet and Pritpal Kaur from Sargodha Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School.

The judgement was declared by Mr Ranjit Singh, headmaster and physics teacher, Government High School, Dhandran, Ms Sangita Sood, biology teacher at the same school, and Ms Varinder Kaur, chemistry teacher, Government Senior Secondary School, Hassanpur. The contest were coordinated by Mr Ranjit Singh and Mr Sanjeev Jain, chemistry teacher of the host school.

Trinjanan celebrated at KCW

LUDHIANA, Oct 24 — Making efforts to revive the rich traditional Punjabi culture, several contests on using charkha, weaving daris, phulkari, making dolls and toys, mehndi, churning milk were held to mark Trinjanan at Khalsa College for Women here today.

Cultural events including folk songs, folk dances and gidda were also presented. The bazagarnian da gidda performed by the students of BA was applauded by all. In the gidda contest, students of BSc were declared first, followed by students of B.Com II. Individual prizes went to Satveer, Harvinder, Navtej and Kuljeet.

In the mehndi contest, Sunaina and Ritika bagged first and second prize, respectively. The chief guest on the occasion was Mr Kamal Kishore Kapila, Commissioner, Income Tax. Principal Harrinder Dhillon gave away prizes.

Divali celebrations at SDP College

LUDHIANA, Oct 24 — Students of over 10 women colleges and schools of the city got together to celebrate Divali at Sanatan Dharam Parcharak College for Women on Saturday evening. There were mehndi and on-the-spot painting competitions.

The cultural programme began with Ganesh vandana which was followed by folk songs and folk dances. Gidha was presented by the students of various schools and colleges. Later Poonam Bhatt and Shivani Jain, the winners of the inter-college debate were given prizes.

Hema Sharma, the best singer of the college, presented her audio-cassette Mata ki bhetein to Mr Balraj Bhasin, president of the college management. Mrs Sushila Verma, Principal of the college, gave Divali wishes to the guests and students of all colleges and schools.

PSEB fined for harassing consumer

LUDHIANA, Oct 24 — In a unique case, the District Consumer Redressal Forum today fined the PSEB Rs 5,000 as payment to a consumer who had been told by the PSEB to pay the electricity bill of his son.

The forum pronouncing the orders said the bill by one electricity connection could not be transferred to the other one. The consumer, Dial Singh, had pleaded for the compensation due to harassment caused to him by the act of the PSEB that handed him a bill of more than Rs 1 lakh, which was in fact of the electricity connection of his son.

The consumer said he was shocked to receive the bill. On making enquires, it was found that the bill was actually arrears of the bill of connection in the name of his son, Pritpal Singh. He decided to contest it as he was living separately from his son and the meters were also different.

The PSEB, interestingly, first said that it was justified in transferring the bill amount as both the meters were installed in the same premises. However, later it admitted the mistake and in an application before the forum said that it would charge the bill from the son and not from the father.Back
