Israel, Palestine agree to end violence
SHARM EL-SHEIKH (Egypt), Oct 17 — Israel and the Palestinians today agreed to “immediate concrete measures” to end violence in the West Bank and Gaza, US President Bill Clinton announced at the end of an emergency West Asia summit.

SC grills govts on Veerappan
NEW DELHI, Oct 17 — The Supreme Court today, during resumed hearing of the Veerappan case, expressed distress at the mishandling of the entire affair by the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments and said the onus lay on them to explain how the forest brigand had not been apprehended for the past 10 years.

Buta moves Delhi High Court
NEW DELHI, Oct 17 — A former Union Minister, Mr Buta Singh, sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a former Prime Minister, Mr P.V. Narasimha Rao, in the JMM MPs bribery case, today moved the Delhi High Court challenging the trial court order.

Punjab Cong men cane-charged
CHANDIGARH, Oct 17 — The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Capt Amarinder Singh, eight MLAs, two MPs and 655 party activists, cane-charged following an attempt to break police barricades to stage a dharna against paddy compensation outside the Punjab Chief Minister’s residence, were today arrested by the city police. 



Killings assume political hue
KARNAL, Oct 17 — The ghastly killing of five persons in Chandrao village in this district over a fortnight back seems to have taken political overtones. Fifteen persons were also injured in the firing opened by a party that had gone there to plough over 150 acres of land belonging to the village panchayat.
