Plan to levy fees on second-hand car dealers
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 17 — To tap the revenue potential of the city, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) plans to levy fees on the car dealers dealing with second-hand cars in the weekly car bazaars on Sundays.

The Apni Mandi Committee, which met here today, recommended that each of the 26 car dealers should pay Rs 500 for using the corporation land on Sundays.

Mr Kanhya Lal Sharma, chairperson of the committee, said the proposal would now be forwarded to the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) for approval. The place for displaying the vehicles will be allotted to them on temporary basis.

This also holds true for the scooter dealers dealing in the sale and purchase of second-hand scooters, who will be required to pay Rs 200 each time they use the place. By doing so, the members claim that they will be able to give the corporation an additional annual income of Rs 6 lakh.

Taking up another important issue pertaining to the sanitation of the apni mandis, the members recommended that the vendors would now be required to take a certificate from the sanitary inspector concerned that they had cleaned the area. Mr Kanhya Lal pointed out that the residents residing in the areas where apni mandis were put often complained that the venues stink as they were not properly cleaned.

An earlier proposal to start day markets in various sectors was also taken up. Possible venues were discussed and the charges varying from Rs 20 to Rs 100 per stall. It was mooted that the markets should be held a day before or a day after the apni mandi.
