APHC to review its role
Tribune News Service

JAMMU, Oct 16 — Senior leaders of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) are keen on debating their role in restoring normalcy in Kashmir.

APHC sources said the executive committee of the conglomerate plans to convene a meeting of the working committee.

The working committee includes representatives of the Jamait-e-Islami, Peoples’ Conference, Muslim Conference, the JKLF and the Awami Action Committee.

Of late leaders of various constituents of the APHC have asserted to maintain their separate identity. Among the organisations that have taken lead in this direction include the People’ Conference, Awami Action Committee, the JKLF and certain Jamait-e-Islami leaders. The working committee meeting is expected to iron out differences among the constituents.

The sources said the APHC chairman, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, has been ‘‘charmed’’ by the Russian President Putin’s statement that the Kashmir ‘‘dispute’’ should be resolved through talks between India and Pakistan. Besides the Russian government American and Chinese governments have also been showing interest in resolving the Kashmir issue.

The majority in the state has become wary of continued turmoil. It wants peace. As such the APHC has not been receiving as much response to its plans and programmes from the people as it used to get three years ago.

Militants and their patrons across the border hold the strings for peace. The Hurriyat leaders know it that talks between a separatist group and the government would not bear fruit unless all the rebel groups support it. That is why APHC leaders have repeated their stand in favour of a tripartite talks.
