Meeting on STDs, AIDS ends
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 16 — The 11th regional meeting of the Internatational Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (SE Asia and West Pacific) and 24th national conference of the Indian Association for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS, concluded here at the PGI yesterday.

At the outset, Dr P Bhargava presented the Sardari Lal Memorial Award paper and discussed about the suppression of the immune system by two mechanisms. He called it a tale of two poisons, where one poison was the HIV infection and the other was the closporin drug therapy that is used to suppress the immune system in patients with damaging immune mediated diseases.

Dr Mukul Sharma, Department of Dermataology and STD, SP Medical College, Udaipur, in his paper on AIDS and sex education in schools, emphasised the need to mobilise the senior teachers in various schools who form an instrumental group by virtue of their unique linkage with the adolescent students as well as their established status as educators in society.

In a survey he found that knowledge regarding various aspects of sex education was found to be quite superficial, gathered mainly from the mass media. Majority of the teachers and headmasters were also found to be unwilling to take up teaching sex education. There was found an immediate need for creating awareness about STDs and HIV among adolescents through sex education in educational institutions and other work places and advocating safer sex practices. His paper won the first prize in the Dr P.S. Ranganathan Memorial Award session, while the second and the third prize were won by Dr Ranju Rai and Dr Bijaylaxmi from the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, PGI.

In various free papers presented today, the role of community based organisations, NGOs, medical and paramedical staff in spreading awareness about RTIs/STDs and in promoting positive-health seeking behaviour was highlighted. Emphasis was also laid on information, education and counselling, as it helps in better planning with regard to the disease. Dr Subhash K. Hira, Director AIDS Research and Control Centre (ARCON), JJ Centre, Mumbai, pointed out that counselling brings about a marked increase in acceptance and constructive coping mechanisms, reduction in the number of sex partners and reduced frequency of unprotected sex. Patient ear to patient’s problem, analysis of the root cause and reassurance alone were a fruitful modality to solve the problem of millions, who may otherwise fall to the trap of quacks.

An interesting study was presented on Kaposi’s Sarcoma in HIV infected males. Any such case is yet to be treated in the PGI.

Meanwhile, the paper of Dr Rajesh Jain of the PGI was adjudged first in the Dr V Govindan Nair Award session, while that of Vineet Kaur of Varanasi and that of Dr Vijay Prabhu of Government General Hospital, Chennai were adjudged second and third during the valedictory function.
