MC removes generators
From Our Correspondent

LUDHIANA, Oct 11 — In a major crackdown, official of the municipal corporation removed generators from several local bus shelters in the city on Tuesday, which were being used to illuminate display boards, put up by the agency responsible for the construction and maintenance of the bus stops.

To have private participation in the civic amenities, the sites for bus shelters were provided by the MC for construction and maintenance to a private agency, which in return was authorised to put up advertisement sign boards on these bus stops.

The agency, instead of going in for power connections, which might have been difficult to obtain, opted for the easier way out and installed a power generator each in these bus shelters. The installation of diesel generators within the bus shelters proved a nuisance for the waiting commuters, besides causing inconvenience in the form of noise and pollution to residents living around these bus stops.

The MC Additional Commissioner Mr Dilip Kumar, who had ordered the removal of the generators, told Ludhiana Tribune that the shelters were put up for the convenience of the waiting bus passengers but with most of the space occupied by the generators and the accompanying noise and air pollution were defeating the entire purpose of the bus stops.

The agency was authorised to put up advertisement boards and if it needed to illuminate the sign boards, it could obtain a power connection. The civic body could not become a party to inflicting noise and environmental pollution upon the residents, he maintained.Back
