PUNJAB

AMRITSAR
INSPECTED: An NCC annual training camp, being held at Shri Guru Angad Dev College, Khadoor Sahib under the command of Lt Col Mukul Dobhal, was inspected by Col J.S. Sandhu, Group Commander of the NCC group headquarters, on Friday.

BATALA
NSS CAMP: An NSS camp of the local R.R. Bawa DAV College for Girls, held at Sahabpur village, 5 km from here, concluded on Friday. Mr Pardeep Sabharwal, SDM, was the chief guest on the concluding function.

BATHINDA
FELICITATED: Mr Vijay Bhatt, president of the local United Welfare Society, was felicitated for his contribution in the field of blood donation by Mr Baldev Raj Chadha, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, at a function organised in Amritsar. About 30 blood donors were awarded at the function.

FEROZEPORE
ARRESTED: Vigilance Bureau sleuths, led by Mr Ramandeep Singh, DSP, caught Darshan Kumar, Manager, Punjab National Bank, Saidoke, while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1500 from Mr Amrik Singh of the same village to pass his loan. A case has been registered.

GURDASPUR
HELD: The police has arrested Balwinder Kaur of Jaura Chhuttran village and her son-in-law Balbir Singh, alias Lakha, of Bhikhariwal village, allegedly involved in a fraudulant land deal. Another accused in the cases, Swaran Singh, has absconded. This was stated in a press note issued by Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, her on Saturday.

HOSHIARPUR
HONOURED: Mr Sunil Dutt and Mr B.R. Jaswal of the local branch of the LIC have secured the first and the third positions, respectively, in the Jalandhar zone for promoting Hindi language during 1999-2000. Mr A.C. Sharma, Branch Manager of the LIC, Hoshiarpur, said here that both employees were honoured at a function in Jalandhar.

JALANDHAR
URGED: The Government School Lecturers Union, Punjab, has urged the state Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to implement their pending demands which were agreed upon at the meeting held on October 21.

SILVER JUBILEE: The 28 Madras Regiment celebrated its silver jubilee in the Western Sector on Thursday. The regiment honoured war widows and next of kin of the deceased soldiers on the occasion.

DEMANDED: The Laghu Udyog Bharti has demanded that the state government should abolish sales tax barriers in Punjab as Information Collection Centres had already been set up by the government. Mr Balwant Gupta, president, said the Central Government should frame separate laws for the small-scale industries.

DHARNA: The Punjab Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Employees Federation will organise a dharna in front of Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, on October 10 against the alleged irregularities by the PAU authorities during the Bachelor of Veterinary Science examination. This was stated here on Friday by Mr Achar Singh Lapran, president of the federation.

AGITATION: The Kirti Kisan Union has decided to intensify its agitation against the alleged indifferent attitude of state government agencies in paddy procurement. The union has threatened to block traffic on October 10.

KAPURTHALA
BOY KILLED: Harpreet (12) of Kanjli village was killed while his two brothers and grandfather were injured in a cart and collision on the Kapurthala-Subhanpur road on Saturday. The injured have been admitted to the local Civil Hospital. The police has registered a case and impounded the tractor.

MALERKOTLA
THEFTS: Two cases of theft were reported from the local industrial area on Friday night. Burglars decamped with iron goods, weighing devices and other instruments from two industrial units in the area. Industrialists have demanded that a police post be set up in the area.

VANMAHOTSAVA: Under the vanmahotsava drive, saplings were planted on the premises of Government Primary School, Ghungranna, and at Kherra village in Ahmedgarh on Friday. Mr Kenar Nath Kapila, Manager, State Bank of Patiala, inaugurated the drive.

MOGA
FORM SHORTAGE: Resentment prevails among the local journalists over the shortage of press telegram forms at the post and telegraph office here. The journalists have requested the Department of Telecommunications to supply press telegram forms to the local telegraph office.

NAWANSHAHR
GANG BUSTED: With the arrest of Jasbir Singh, alias Kaka, Surinderpal Singh, alias Shinda, Bhupinder Singh, alias Bhinda, and Harinderpal Singh, alias Bittu, the police claims to have busted a gang of robbers active in Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala districts. Two countrymade 315-bore pistols, a 32-bore revolver, a few cartridges and a stolen motorcycle were recovered from the accused.

conference: The All India Lawyers’ Union, Chandigarh unit, is organising its biennial conference on Sunday at Musafir Bhawan. The conference is to be inaugurated by Justice Kuldip Singh, Judge, (retd.) Supreme Court. The main speakers will include Mr Hari Singh Nagra, Rajeev Godara, Mr R.S. Cheema, Mr Pawan Bansal, Mr Som Dutt Sharma and Mr Joginder Singh Toor. The conference is being held to discuss the proposed amendments in criminal procedure. 

MEET THE PRESS: Sardar Avtar Singh Hit, President, Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, will “Meet the Press” at the Chandigarh Press Club on Monday at 11 a.m. 

PANCHKULA
exhibition: A painting exhibition by eight prominent artists of Panchkula and Shimla was inaugurated at Panchkula by Mr Prem Singh, Principal, Government College of Art, Chandigarh, on Thursday. These artists include Mr Davinder Singh Ajnabee, Mr Danny, Mr S.R. Kohli, Ms Kanchan, Mr Parveen Tareja, Mr S.K. Batish, Mr V.P. Gupta and Mrs Sunita Sethi. The paintings ranged from works on nature, scenes of Punjabi village life, examples of modern art, portraits, portrayals of the mind, intellect and ego, pen and ink portraits, poster colour paintings. 

Muqabla: Sutlej Public School, Sector 4, Panchkula, won the Dance Muqabla No.1, organised by the Bengali Association at Parshuram Bhawan, Chandigarh on Friday, on the occasion of Durga Puja celebrations. The winners were Raman Sharma in the under-16 category, Soumitra Mitra in the 11-16 category while Balpreet and Neha Paul won the consolation prizes. The prizes were given away by the SSP, Chandigarh, Mr Parag Jain. The school also organised a Dasehra function and the students enacted scenes from the Ramayana. The principal, Mr Krit Sahay, gave away the prizes to the best actors.

AMBALA
FUNCTION: A state-level function of Balmiki Jayanti will be held at Gannor (Sonepat) on October. This was stated by Mr M.L. Sarwan, Chief General Secretary of Haryana Balmiki Sabha here today. He said the Governor of Haryana, Babu Parmanand, would be the chief guest on this occasion. After the function a meeting of the state executive committee of the sabha would also be held there in which the district and block president of the sabha had also been invited. 

POSTPONED: The proposed visit of Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mrs Sushma Swaraj, to Ambala has been postponed due to certain reasons. The General Secretary of the Ambala unit of the BJP, Mr Subhadesh Mittal, said the new date Mrs Swaraj’s visit would be announced soon. 

championship: Government Middle School, Subhash Nagar, secured first position in the sub-junior girls sports championship in the District Gymnastics Championship which concluded here on Saturday. Jain Girls School got the second position. In the junior team championship, Musaddi Lal Girls School, Ambala cantonment remained first. Farookha Khalsa School topped the senior team championship. The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Mahender Kumar, gave away the prizes to the winners. 

clarification: Mr Ram Niwas, Deputy Commissioner, Ambala, has contradicted the news item published in certain newspapers that the Deputy Commissioner has sold vehicles seized by the police under 25 Police Act. In a press note issued here today he has clarified that under 25 Police Act, the District Magistrate has the power to release unclaimed vehicles on temporary basis to the persons till the actual owner comes, and in these cases the actual owner was not known. He said that this was done with a view to ensure that the vehicles remain in running condition and do not get deteriorated due to lying unused in police stations for a long time. 

FATEHABAD
NABBED: Rajinder Singh, a clerk at the local cooperative society office, was nabbed by a police party while allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2,500 from a villager. The raid party was sent by Mr Shrikant Jadhav, SP, on the complaint of Mr Suresh Kumar of Bhuna village in the district.

KURUKSHETRA
WORKSHOP: A two-day workshop on legal literacy was organised by the Women’s Studies Research Centre of Kurukshetra University. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Hoshiar Singh, addressed the gathering on the occasion.

YAMUNANAGAR
SEIZED: The police has arrested three persons Devi Dutt, Pawan Kumar and Parmod Kumar and seized 500 gm brown sugar from them. Mr K.K. Sindhu, SSP, said here on Friday that a case under the NDPS Act had been registered against the accused.

HIMACHAL PRADESH

CHAMBA
ELECTROCUTED: Kartar (40), an employee of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) was electrocuted at an HPSEB substation at Koti, about 30 km from here, on Friday. The body of the deceased was handed over to his family members after post-mortem. A case has been registered.

NAHAN
GRIEVANCES REDRESSED: Mr Vikas Labroo, Additional District Magistrate, Sirmaur, heard peoples’ complaints on the Grievances Redressal Day organised here on Thursday. Of the 65 cases heard, 23 were disposed of on the spot.
