LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — All the major TV channels beamed by Star TV have gone off the air in Ludhiana following a price war which has broken out between Star TV on the one hand and SITI Cable and cable operators of the megacity on the other.

Companies vanish after cheating investors
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — Various plantation companies claim in their advertisements that they can double or even triple the money of the investors within two-three years. People get attracted by the names of big directors, advertising and exhibitions organised by the companies. Most of these companies turn out to be frauds.

Orchestra party girl murdered
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — A flower girl with an orchestra party, who allegedly also worked as a sex worker by night, was reportedly murdered by her self- professed brother, while in an inebriated condition. The girl was murdered for speaking ill about the wife of the accused.

Doctor tampered with body: relatives
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — A doctor posted in Civil Hospital at Garhshankar has been accused of tampering with the post-mortem report of a woman who had died under mysterious circumstances in the house of her in-laws in the town.

Probe into petrol adulteration
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — The Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University has constituted a three-member fact finding committee to fix responsibility for the adulteration detected in the petrol, being supplied by the filling station of the university a few days ago.

LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — The conviction of the former Prime Minister, Mr P.V.Narsimha Rao, and the former Union Home Minister, Mr Buta Singh, by a special court in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha bribery case was not enough, most of the persons to whom Ludhiana Tribune spoke to said. They favoured an exemplary punishment to those who made a mockery of the democratic system and betrayed confidence of the masses.

Man found murdered
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — A man was found murdered in the fields a little off the Ferozepore road near the Baddowal cantonment area late last evening. The man had been murdered by being hit on the head.

Poppy husk seized
KHANNA
The Khanna police claimed to have seized 100 kg of poppy husk and 1.5 kg of opium and arrested three persons here today.

Gang of thieves busted in city
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — The Sadar police has achieved a major success by arresting three of the four members of a gang of thieves. With the arrest of the accused, the police has also solved atleast seven cases of theft in various parts of the city and the looting of an octroi post recently.

Stock exchange turnover 6872 cr 
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — The year 2000 would be remembered as the year of turnaround for the Ludhiana Stock Exchange. During 1999-2000 the exchange recorded a turnover of Rs 6872 crore (single sided). The combined turnover of the stock exchange and its subsidiary, i. e LSE Securities Limited, was estimated to exceed Rs 15000 crore in the current financial year, said Mr Vishwanath Dhiri, while welcoming the members to the 18th annual general meeting of the exchange.

‘Petro price hike bad for exporters’
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — Mr Inderjit Singh Pardhan and Mr Avtar Singh, president and general secretary, respectively, of the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings, Ludhiana, have condemned the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products made by the Government of India. 

66 pc paddy procured in Ludhiana mandis
LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — The government procurement agencies had purchased 1.16 lakh tonnes of paddy till Monday evening out of the total arrival of 1,75,487 tonnes in the various mandis in this district. The total purchase by government agencies was almost 66 per cent of the total produce brought to the mandis, which was highest in the state.

Telecom Dept ordered to pay compensation
LUDHIANA
, Oct 4 — The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum here has directed the Department of Telecommunications through the General Manager, Telephones, Ludhiana, to pay Rs 10,000 to Mr Shamsher Singh of Mundian Kalan village as compensation for deficiency in service and to provide a telephone to him within 15 days of the receipt of the order.

LUDHIANA, Oct 4 — A “health alert” has been sounded in Ludhiana, following several cases of suspected dengue fever in different parts of the city.
