GSA gesture to animals LUDHIANA The resolution was passed at a meeting on September 10 presided over by Mr S.S. Grewal, president. Mr Grewal in a press release said the GSA was fully responsible for implementing the rules and for conducting all events during the festival in the manner permitted by law. The GSA took this action because of reports published in various newspapers regarding cruelty towards animals in certain events. Mr Grewal had a detailed meeting with the president, People For Animals (PFA) before passing the said resolution. He on the behalf of the GSA invited observes from the PFA to Rural Olympics to guide them. He requested the PFA to put up a stall to educate the rural people about the activities of the PFA and cruelty towards animal. Mr Grewal promised to give free space for the stall. |
Paddy procurement measures reviewed LUDHIANA, Sept 15 The district administration today claimed to have finalised all arrangements for the procurement of paddy in 110 purchase centres of the district by various agencies, scheduled to start from September 21. A meeting of the officers of various purchase agencies and other departments concerned was held here today under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr S. K. Sandhu. Giving details of the arrangements, Mr Sandhu said the purchasing staff by different agencies had been appointed in the mandis and sufficient stock of gunny bags, polythene covers and crates had been arranged. The DC informed that the allotment of purchase centres among different purchase agencies had been finalised as per the distribution of mandis. The Food Corporation of India tops the list with 48 purchase centres, followed by PUNSUP with 14, Markfed 12, Food and Civil Supplies 7, Punjab State Warehousing Corporation 6 and Punjab Agro Industrial Corporation 2. In the remaining 21 centres, purchase would be shared by more than one agency. Mr Sandhu revealed that different market committees had made elaborate arrangements for cleanliness of the purchase centres, drinking water and proper shelter for the farmers, who required lights in all the purchase centres. He said the market committees had also been directed to ensure comprehensive checking of the weighing system and nobody would be allowed to create any kind of difficulty for the farmers in the mandis. He said to ensure speedy disposal of the procurement work, comprehensive supervision and checking would be carried out during the procurement season by senior officers of the district administration and Food and Civil Supplies Department. He disclosed that the SDM of all subdivisions had been asked to visit and look into the arrangements to check any kind of last stage lapse. The Deputy Commissioner informed that during the last year, 11,80,417 tonnes of paddy had arrived in all the mandis of the district and during this season, 13.5 lakh tonnes was expected. The District Food and Supply Controller, Mr Parveen Vij, informed that the arrival of paddy had started in the different mandis in the district and so far, 7213 tonnes of paddy had arrived. |
