Rally against caste-based reservation in jobs
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — A massive rally was organised by members of the general category against the caste-based reservations in services and educational institutions. The Central, Haryana and Punjab Governments were discriminating against persons belonging to the general category under pressure from the Scheduled Caste (SC) lobby, speakers addressing the rally said.

Power to new town will not be from PSEB alone
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — The Punjab State Electricity Board will not be the only agency to supply power to the proposed town of Anandgarh. The new Town Planning and Development Authority of Anandgarh wants to include another party in the power-supply project. The third party is most likely to be a major private player in the energy sector. The plan is to have a multiple power-supply system, including backup against power breakdown.

‘Need to change approach towards industry’
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — "We are prisoners of procedure." This remark at the inaugural session of the Army-Industry Partnership, 2000, aptly summed up the obstacles in the current Army-industry working environment, which both sides are hoping to resolve in a two-day interface which was inaugurated at Western Command Headquarters, Chandi Mandir today.

HC to have more courtrooms
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — Buildings of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the District Courts are is the process of expansion. Additional courtrooms are being constructed in both courts, while additional chambers are being constructed for lawyers of the High Court and big room is being constructed for women advocates in the District Courts.

CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — The police has arrested three persons, including a woman, on the charge of murdering a Dhanas resident in Sector 38 here today.

Man succumbs to injuries
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — A Mohali resident succumbed to his injuries when he was hit and injured by a jeep near the Sector 45-46 barrier.

Directive to CMO in custodial death case
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — In the custodial death case of an ex-sarpanch of Goggan village in Hoshiarpur district, Mr Justice S.S. Nijjar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Chief Medical Officer and head of the Civil Hospital, Hoshiarpur, Hoshiarpur, to transmit the post-mortem report of the deceased to the court within seven days and issued notice to the Advocate-General, for September 25.

Old man’s divorce plea rejected
Mr Justice R.L. Anand of the High Court today dismissed the appeal for divorce filed by Surjit Singh, a 70-year-old man, seeking reversal of the order of the Additional District Judge, Ludhiana, rejecting his petition for divorce against his wife, Gurdev Kaur, also in her seventies.

CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — There is much more to the creations laid out at the Art Folio than their visual appeal. As the eyes rest on delectable images created with skill out of wrought iron, a strange sense of mysticism dawns upon the mind. For each piece on display seems to have been inspired by mythology.

Cataract main cause of blindness
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the country, accounting for nearly 50 to 80 per cent blindness cases. This was disclosed by Dr M.R Dogra from the Department of Ophthalmology, PGI, while discussing the causes of visual impairment on the fourth day of the WHO workshop on “Orientation training for disability prevention and rehabilitation’’.

YPS earns reputation for squash
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — If you hear that a youngster has won a medal in any squash meet, you can safely assume that he must be a student of Yadavindra Public School at SAS Nagar. Squash players of the school have earned a reputation in the region. National squash player, Amitoj Inder Singh, is a former student of the school. He trained the YPS under-15 team that won the North Zone Inter Public Schools (ICSE) Meet in Delhi’s Modern School.

Hockey championship begins
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — The 18th Chandigarh State Hockey Championship began here today at Sector 42 Hockey Stadium with two matches played today. The three-day meet is being organised by the Chandigarh Hockey Association. The meet was inaugurated by Mr K.K. Mehra, Deputy General Manager, State Bank of India.

Tug-of-war contest at ITBP centre
BHANU, Sept 14 — The second national sub-junior tug-of-war championship got under way at the Basic Training Centre of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) at Bhanu here today.

KV Chandi Mandir lift football trophy
CHANDIGARH, Sept 14 — The football team of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Chandi Mandir, lifted the trophy on the final day of the Inter K.V. Football Tournament (under-19) of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chandigarh region. In all 19 matches were played on league-cum-knockout basis by 13 teams at K.V. No. 1, Chandi Mandir, from September 11 to 14.
