Top cop ducks questions on transfers of officers
Tribune News Service

LUDHIANA, Sept 8 — “The proposal for the transfer of certain top police officials in the state, particularly those in the border range, has been sent to the state government. It is for the government to decide whether it is to be accepted as such or in a modified form.”

The Punjab Director General of Police, Mr Sarabjit Singh, said this while talking to mediapersons here today. The DGP was here to attend a meeting of all range officers and the Zonal Inspector Generals of Police. At the meeting, these top police officials discussed crime rate, security arrangements, traffic rules and anti-terrorist activities.

Mr Sarabjit Singh refused to give much information on the transfers of officials in the state who are not serving in the border range.

Answering a question on the promotions of some police officers, the DGP said promotions were being given only in cases where these were long overdue and no new vacancies in the next higher cadre existed. He said the policy for giving ORP promotions was reviewed in 1997. He said, even in 1999, 100 persons had been promoted to the level of DSP in their own rank and pay.

Mr Sarabjit Singh said recent trends in crime, measures to curb the crime rate and the investigation in certain sensational cases were discussed at the meeting held earlier in Police Lines. He said there had been a marginal increase in the crime rate in the state. “A disturbing violent trend is seen in property-related crimes, kidnappings for ransom and the emergence of organised gangs that hired contract killers,” he said.
