Lawyer held in assault case

KAITHAL, Sept 3 — A local lawyer, Mr Ishwar Singh Mehla, who had allegedly attacked the Judicial Magistrate, Ms Shalini Singh, with a knife in her courtroom and later threatened the Additional Sessions Judge, Mr R.C. Bansal, on telephone on September 2 was arrested by the police today. He was produced in the court of Mr N.P. Dewet, who remanded him in judicial custody till September 19.

According to police sources, Mr Mehla was arrested from the local bus stand where he was waiting to board a bus for Patiala. A knife used in the incident was also seized from him.

It may be recalled that the said lawyer had attacked the Judicial Magistrate with a knife in her courtroom as a result of which she sustained some injuries. However, the steno and reader of the Judge intervened and saved her. Following this incident a case under Sections 307, 323, 353 and 452 of the IPC and Sections 25, 24 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against him.

The same evening Mr Mehla allegedly threatened the local Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr R.C. Bansal, on telephone following which a case under Sections 504 and 506 of the IPC was registered against him.

Hrishikesh to get Phalke award

NEW DELHI, Sept 5 (PTI) — Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who evolved a new genre in Indian cinema carving a niche in an industry dominated by commercial films, was today chosen for the coveted Dada Saheb Phalke Award for 1999.

An official announcement which named the 78-year-old film-maker for the award said President K.R. Narayanan would present the award on September 18 along with national film awards.

His touching tales of ordinary people in films like “Anand”, “Mili”, “Anari”, “Anupama”, “Abhimaan”, “Anuradha”, “Satyakaam” and “Namak Haram” drew large crowds to the theatres during the ’70s, a period which also saw blockbusters like “Sholay” and “Bobby”.
