Panchkula take on Chandigarh today

CHANDIGARH, Aug 23 — The Panchkula district team will take on formidable Chandigarh in the opening match of the Haryana State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for under-19 tomorrow, according to the honorary secretary of the Panchkula District Cricket Association (affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association).

Anil Sharma, an all-rounder, who returned on August 21 after a two-week-long England tour, will lead the Panchkula team. He has also been signed by Middlesex to play in the Minor county Championship in England for the forthcoming season. The hosts batting line-up depends upon Vishal Sahni part from Vikram Verma and Harish Garg where as skipper Anil Sharma along with Sunny Behl and leg spinner Bhalendera Singh form the bowling department. All-rounder Ravi Verma and Manoj Phullar are expected to strengthen the team. Ravi Shankar is all set to keep the stumps. The final 11 would be declared in the morning.

Cricket Club beat Eagle XI

In the first Balbir Singh Memorial Cricket Tournament for the Khalsa Cup, Cricket Club defeated Eagle XI by 50 runs. Batting first Godrej XI scored 157 for nine in the allotted 25 over. Harpal Singh and Rajesh Patha scored 33 runs and 24 runs, respectively.

In the second match an excellent performances by Rakesh Jolly, in both batting and bowling, and Prabhjot Singh (56) helped LIC XI to beat Mullanpur XI by 144 runs.

Brief scores: (Godrej XI: 157 for 9 in 25 overs (Harpal 33, Rajesh Patha 26; Parshant 3 for 24, Babloo 2 for 14, Anurag 2 for 17)

Eagle XI: 107 all out in 21.4 overs. (Sushil 33, Ankur 18; Sanjay Dhull 2 for 10, Amit Bhardwaj 2 for 12, Harit Sharma 2 for 17).

LIC XI: 234 for 4 in 25 overs (Rakesh Jolly 75, Prabhjot 57, Bhupinder Singh sr 27, Ajay Manu 27; Gurinder Singh 2 for 28, Hafiz 2 for 32)

Manan enters snooker semi-final

CHANDIGARH, Aug 23 — Manan Nagpal entered the semifinal league of the open Snooker event of the YMCA Open Billiards and Snooker Tournament being played at YMCA Hall, Sector 11, Chandigarh. He won a cliff-hanger against Tarun Kumar.

Manan displayed superb potting to capture the first two fames 55-11 and 64-42 but in the next two frames Tarun reversed the trend to win them comfortably 58-29 and 69-43. In the fifth frame Manan built up an early lead and kept Tarun at bay to clinch the frame 67-28 and the match.

Anil Sharma entered the semifinal stage of the open billiards event outclassing Manav Dhavan 301-193. Anil played with great concentration and hit many breaks above 30 points. In other billiards matches Ashish Noel, the youngest player, again created an upset by trouncing the oldest participant R.C. Sharma 190-183, whereas Sanjay Kaushal prevailed over Sanjeev Verma 263-250 in a closely-contested match.

A.S. Banipal also entered quarter-final stage of the open snooker event by ousting Aman Bhasin. The match started with fine potting by Banipal, who comfortably captured the first two frames 48-25 and 62-49. Aman won the third frame 49-43 but wilted under pressure in the fourth frame 47-68 to lose the match.

Amarjit to lead cricket team

CHANDIGARH, Aug 23 — Amarjit Kumar and Deepinder Singh Chhabra have been selected as the captain and vice-captain, respectively, of the Chandigarh Life Insurance Corporation of India employees cricket team, to participate in the second Inter-Corporation/Bank Employees Cricket Tournament to be held at Gursagar Cricket Ground, near Sukhna Lake on September 2.

The team: Amarjit Kumar (captain), Deepinder Singh Chhabra vice-captain, Ashwani Sharma, S.M.S. Chauhan, Sanjay Sharma, Anil Kumar, Anil Arya, Gautam Mohan, Sumandeep Singh, Arvinder Sharma, Rajiv Sharma, Jaswinder Pal Singh, Raj Kumar, Kamal Mehra, Kuldip Kaul, Vinod Kaul, Mohan Lal, Rakesh Chauhan.

16 teams for LIC cricket meet

CHANDIGARH, Aug 23 — As many as 16 teams will vie for the top honours in the second Inter-Financial Institutions/ Corporation/Bank Employees League-cum-knock-out-basis cricket tournament organised by the LIC Employees Cricket Club, Chandigarh, at Sri Gursagar Cricket Ground, Chandigarh, from September 2, according to the press secretary of the LIC Employees Cricket Club, Chandigarh.

The teams have been divided into four pools. The top two teams of each pool will qualify for the quarterfinals. Many Ranji Trophy and other national and state level players as Arun Sharma, M.S. Sodhi, Kamal Thakur, Bharat Bhushan, Narinder Kwatra, Daniel Banerjee, Ravinder Nain, Amar Jit Kumar, Harminder Kaku, Sanjay Bhatia, Vijay Mathur, Deepinder Singh Chhabbra, Dinesh Gupta, Hemant Puri, S.M.S. Chauhan, Ajay Sharma, Ram Pal, Kuldeep Singh be seen in action.

Teams from Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh will take part.
