Abhinav wins close match CHANDIGARH, In the handicap snooker matches, Anil Sharma displayed fine potting skill and a good cue control to bear Tarun Kumar in three frames. Anil won the first frame, 50-31, but in the second, Tarun played well after trailing for a while and won, 62-54. In the last frame, Anil played cautiously and won, 47-23. In same event, Anil beat Vikram Narula in three frames. Sunil lost the first frame, 54-69, but in second and third frames, he outclassed Vikram. Sunil won the last two frames, 50-19, 62-39. In the juniors' snooker event, Aman Bhasin joined Manan Nagpal and Eroz in the semi-finals by beating Madhur in a one-sided match, 46-12, 58-29. Cricket trials: Sport meet: The two-day meet will have kabaddi, athletics and volleyball events. Cash prizes will be given to the winner and runners-up of the kabaddi event and first three position holders of the athletics events. GCG-42 cagers win UT
junior meet CHANDIGARH, The boys' title went to SD Public School after it defeated DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, 46-8. For the winners, Harminder Singh scored 20 points, followed by Chander Prakash who scored 18 points. Ravinder and Bhupinder scored four points each for the winners. For the losers, Balraj, Vishal, Rohit and Taney scored two points each. The three-day meet was organised by the Chandigarh Basketball Association. The girls' final was a close affair from the beginning and at halftime, the score was 14-14. In the second half, GCG-42 maintained the lead for most of the time, but the score was 24-24 at full time. In the extra time, GCG-42 won, 28-27. Sarita scored the maximum points (19) for the winners, followed by Babita (9). For the losers, Anchal scored the maximum points (14). Geeta scored eight points and Sapna three. Mr A.S. Judge, President of the CBA, was the chief guest on the occasion, while Mr Ravinder Talwar, General Secretary of the association, and Mr R.K. Gupta, Deputy Director of the Sports Authority of India, were also present there. Bharti, Secretary of the CBA, said the Junior Asian Basketball Confederation Tournament would be held in Delhi from December 15 to 23. He said the trials for it would be held in Delhi on August 22. Trials to select the UT boys and girls for this will be held tomorrow in the Sector 8 DAV Senior Secondary School.

Annual meeting of NCC officers
held CHANDIGARH,
The meeting is held to take stock of training, adventure and other allied activities arranged last year and ensure that the schemes for this year are executed properly. Principals of various colleges of the region also took part. In his inaugural address, Brig R K Mehra called upon the group commanders to ensure precautions for the safety and security of the cadets at the firing ranges and during training camps. He stressed the need to provide proper quality clothing and uniforms to the cadets as it instills a sense of pride, dignity and equality among them. The Brigadier lauded the efforts by the group commanders for imparting training to the cadets and carrying out other activities as per schedule. He urged them to maintain constant liaison with the state governments to ensure timely availability of funds to achieve best results. Expressing gratitude to the state governments for their support for the cause of the NCC, he apprised the state representatives of the problems faced by them, especially the inadequacy and untimely release of funds. The deficiency of staff in the NCC and group headquarters was also discussed. A unique activity this year was the visit of cadets to the Kargil sector where Operation Vijay was launched by the armed forces last year. The visit was conducted in separate groups for boys and girls in May. Another achievement for the directorate was that it won the athletics trophy this year for the third consecutive year. The cadets bagged six gold, four silver and four bronze medals. Prizes for various activities held during the year 1999- 2000 were also given by Brigadier Mehra. The Group HQs, Shimla, topped the list of honours by lifting three trophies for best cadet, best naval wing and for national integration awareness, besides jointly sharing the inter-group championship banner with Ambala Group, which also won the cultural trophy. Rohtak received two trophies for drill and line and flag area while the best aid squadron trophy was bagged by Amritsar. The aim of the NCC is to develop qualities of character, courage, comradeship, leadership, secular outlook, spirit of adventure and sportsmanship, and ideals of selfless service among the youth to make them good citizens. |

Five of the members are elected from among the panches and sarpanches. Around 158 votes are to be cast from members of the 17 panchayats in Chandigarh. Two members are to be from among the licenced arthias (commission agents), one member from the palledars (who weigh material at the grain market) and the last member from among the members of the Mani Majra Cooperative-cum-Processing Society. The Chairman and Vice-Chairman will be elected from among the nine members and will be based on simple majority. |
Aug 20 to be dry
day in Mohali SAS NAGAR, Aug 18 — The District Magistrate, Mr Gurinder Singh Grewal, through an order passed today, has declared August 20 as dry day within the municipal limits of Mohali when Mohali Municipal Council goes to the polls. The sale, purchase and serving of liquor at restaurants and hotels has been banned. Any person violating these orders would be prosecuted. |
