Badminton meet from September 7

CHANDIGARH, Aug 15 —The Chandigarh Badminton Association will hold the annual UT state badminton championship in all age groups from September 7 to 10 at the Sector 42 indoor hall, according to Mr Gian Chand Gupta, President of the association. The state meet was scheduled to be held from August 24, but as the North Zone inter-state badminton championship was postponed.

In this four-day meet, events will be conducted for boys and girls in under-10, under-13, under-16, under-19, senior and veteran (men) in above-35, above-45 and above- 55 sections. The UT team for the North Zone in junior and senior sections will be selected on the basis of this championship to take part in Narang Cup (boys), Shafi Qureshi Cup (girls), Chadha Cup (women) and Rahimtollah Cup (men). He further told that Subhash Nagpal would be the chairman of the organising committee, while Col Raj Parmar the organising secretary and Mr Raj Pal Sharma joint organising secretary.

Mr TPS Puri, secretary of the CBA, revealed that they had been allotted the junior national badminton championship from November 15 to 23 in under-19 section, where 300 players were expected to take part. It would have inter-zonal state meets along with individual championships. A budget of nearly Rs 15 lakh had been drawn for this meet. As per contract signed last year by BAI with Doordarshan , the latter would show live coverage of semi- finals and finals. He said sponsors had started evincing interest.

Mr DK Mukerjee, founder and patron of the association, said for under-13 events, CBA was not getting any grants from the UT Administration, whereas the Chandigarh Football Academy for under-10 years was set up in Chandigarh. He said the Government of India was providing grants for this section to the BAI for holding under 13-events at the nationals. The Chandigarh Sports Council was giving grants equivalent to what kabaddi, kho-kho or other less costly sport were given.

It was also decided to actively pursue the administration for timely completion of renovation of the Sector 42 indoor badminton hall, the venue for the junior nationals. Colonel Parmar said that entries for the UT championships would close on September 4 and could be given at the Sector 42 hall or the Sector 23 GSSS centre or Home Science College, Sector 10.

Title for Public Sports Club

CHANDIGARH, Aug 15 — Public Sports Club, SAS Nagar, won the team championship by securing 68 points, while Weightlifting Coaching Centre, Sector 42, secured second position in the 16th Chandigarh Powerlifting Meet, which concluded here yesterday at Sector 42 Sports Complex. Jagdish Singh of PSC, SAS Nagar, won silver medal in 90 kg class by lifting a total weight of 602.5 kg. He also created a new record in bench press by lifting a weight of 147.5 kg, against the previous record of 145 kg, established by Paramjit Singh of Chandigarh. Mr V.K. Bhalla, President of the Chandigarh Powerlifting Association, gave away the prizes.

Jagdish Singh (PSC) 2, squat 225 kg, bench press 147.5 kg, dead lift 230 kg, total 602.5 kg ; Vikas Duggal (WCC-42) 3, total 432.5 kg; 100 kg class— Devinder Singh (Chd) 1, squat 250 kg, bench press 130 kg, dead lift 260 kg, total 640 kg; Aman Awasthi (WCC-42) 2, squat 90 kg, bench press 67.5 kg, dead lift 140 kg, total-297.5 kg; 110 kg class— Vijay Verma (Chd) 1, squat 220 kg, bench press 160 kg, dead lift 220 kg, total 600 kg; Simranjit Singh (Chd) 2, squat 185 kg, bench press 80 kg, dead lift 210 kg, total 475 kg.

Cricket tourney: The second Dev Raj memorial cash prize cricket tournament will be held at Sector 16 cricket stadium from September 3. Entries close with Mr Kamal Mehra at SCO 48, Sector 17-E.

DC order on public grievances

PANCHKULA, Aug 15 — Officials of the administration were directed to reserve time to attend to public grievances and display boards of the same outside their offices. Directing the officials to work in consonance with the policy of the government of addressing complaints of the public, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Surinder Kumar Monga, later attended to complaints of the public.

He was addressing a meeting of the District Public Relations and Grievances Redressal committee. He directed the officials to check whether their staff were observing office timing and did not play truant during office hours. Constituting a committee of officials, Mr Monga said that the Administrator, HUDA, Subdivisional Officers of Panchkula and Kalka and the District Development and Panchayat Officer would ensure that employees remained in office during duty hours.

Earlier, he listened to 15 complaints, out of which 10 were disposed of during the meeting. In one of the pending complaints, he directed the officials concerned to make arrangement for a water tanker in General Hospital for 24-hour water supply and also to make arrangements for an additional tubewell in the compound.

On a complaint of Mohd. Motiur Rahaman of Haripur village, he ordered the Tehsildar and the Deputy Superintendent of Police to resolve the dispute of way through the village by speaking to the two parties involved as also the sarpanch of the village. Further, he asked them to carry out talks within a week and submit a report of the same before the next meeting.

The Deputy Commissioner attended to the complaint of Raunaki Ram of Toka village regarding encroachment on panchyat land by some people. He directed the Block Development Officer and Panchyati Officer to earmark the land and send in a report by August 16.

Earlier in the day, at a meeting of district officers he discussed the progress of the Prime Minister Employment Programme, Apani Beti Apana Dhan, Health and Family Welfare, 20-point programme, encroachment on government land, small savings and the announcements made by Chief Minister.

PANCHKULA, Aug 15 — Highlighting the importance of tree plantation, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.K. Monga, said that this was the only way to ensure that the coming generations could breathe in clean air. He was speaking at the tree plantation drive at Sabzi Mandi in Sector 20 here today.

He said that the growing population, pollutants emitted by the increasing number of vehicles and industries and deforestation were some of the important issues before the present generation. Mr Monga added that maintenance of a balance between the forest area and the fast pace of development was a must.

Appealing to the officials to undertake tree plantation in all open spaces, he said that there was a need to plant trees along the roadside as well. The INLD General Secretary, Mr Pradeep Chaudhry, was also present on the occasion
