Six militants among
16 killed in valley SRINAGAR, Aug 11 (UNI) — Six militants, two security personnel and a counter-insurgent were among 16 persons killed while security forces captured two militants and seized some arms and ammunition in the valley during the past 24 hours. A report from
Baramula said Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked shelling from across the border in Teetwal. Karnah, Keran and Uri sectors early this morning. However, there was no report of any loss of life or damage to property in the two-hour-long shelling. An official spokesman said two civilians injured in yesterdays car bomb blast at the Residency road near here succumbed in the hospital late last night. With this the total toll in the blast has risen to 14. Panic gripped the downtown city when militants hurled three grenades towards BSF patrol at Gurgari Mohalla last night. However, the grenade missed the target and exploded on the roadside without causing any damage. He said an encounter took place between militants and security forces at Chawara Ramkote late last night during which three militants were killed. One village defence committee member also lost his life and are AK rifle, 3, magazines, two grenades, one wireless set and 51 rounds where seized from the slain militants. |

in accident BARAMULA, Aug 11 (UNI) — Four Army personnel were killed and five injured, some of them seriously, when their vehicle rolled into a deep gorge in the Uri sector today. Official sources said four jawans of 10 Sikh Regiment were killed and five others injured when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a 200-foot gorge at Rangerwani in the Uri sector. The driver had lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a curve. The injured were admitted to hospital where the condition of some of them is stated to be very critical, sources said. |
JJSF activists
stage protest JAMMU, Aug 11 — Activists of the Jammu Joint Students Federation (JJSF) today took out a procession and blocked the road in front of Science College in protest against the denial of admission to more than 700 students to BA, B.Sc and B.Com (part 1) courses. The students shouted slogans against the state government and alleged that the government was not taking any interest in solving students’ problem on priority basis. They demanded the students should be accommodated in the evening colleges till the new colleges were opened. They also demanded revival of the catchment area scheme and opening of more new colleges at Samba, Reasi, Nowshera, Billawar, Hiranagar and Ramnagar. Meanwhile, a relay fast resorted to by JJSF activists entered into the fifth day today. |
