Admn move to curb private coaching CHANDIGARH,
Aug 7 — In order to curb the menace of private coaching, the UT Administration has started giving coaching for the competitive examinations namely IIT, CET and PMT in schools of the city. A panel of 10-expert teachers has been set up for each subject who will collect the material of that particular subject and prepare 30-minute tests for the students. The tests will be held on every Saturday. Extra coaching classes will be held after the regular classes on the school premises. The DPI ( Schools), Mr D.S.Saroya, said from the next week onwards tests for the four subjects namely maths, physics, biology and chemistry would be conducted on alternate Saturdays like one week maths and physics and another week on biology and chemistry. The first test was held on August 5 in government schools of Chandigarh. After the tests the answers were discussed and debated with teachers of that particular subject. The mode of teaching also helps the teachers in their professional growth. The most attractive point of this decision is that the coaching of all competitions will be delivered free of cost to students in their respective schools. A team of senior officials from the Education Department had visited various schools and found that maximum number of students cover their syllabus at the tuitions and get their false attendance marked. The DPI Schools has assured that any type of problem of the students will be cleared by the teachers and they are free to approach him also. Apart from the regular studies the studies will be imparted coaching for the exams too. The students have a benefit to meet expert teachers. Meanwhile, the principals of various schools and colleges, including the Principal of DAV College, has applauded the decision of the government. They believe that this might control the overgrowing trend of tuitions among students. |

PIL against poor
streetlighting CHANDIGARH,
Aug 7 — A city court today granted leave to two Panchkula residents, Mr Pankaj Chandgothia, Advocate and Mr Manish Jain, a businessman, to pursue a Public Interest Litigation against the Chandigarh Administration and the Municipal Corporation on the issue of poor streetlighting on the city roads. Earlier, Mr Chandgothia had filed a civil suit seeking direction to the city authorities to replace the tubelights and mercury lamps with sodium vapour lamps to put an end to the public nuisance of dark and dimly-lit main roads and streets. He submitted that the sodium lamps gave better lighting and were effective even in foggy conditions. Mr Chandgothia has also filed an application under Section 91 of the CrPC to seek permission of the court to institute the suit in public interest. The counsel for Municipal Corporation opposed the application contending that no public interest was involved in the suit and that no special damage was caused to the plaintiffs, both of whom were residents of Panchkula and not of the city. The plaintiff, on the other hand, contended that darkness on the city streets amounted to public nuisance and they were entitled to institute a suit for public relief even though they had not suffered any special damage. After hearing the arguments, the Civil Judge (junior division), Mr Naval Kumar, allowed the application. The case has now been adjourned to November 20 for evidence. |
First show of ‘Gatha Ik Pind Di’ today CHANDIGARH, Aug 7 — The preview of the Punjabi play — Gatha ik pind di — written and directed by the veteran Punjabi playwright Sardar Gursharan Singh will be held at Punjab Kala Bhavan on August 8 in the evening. The play is the first in the series of plays to be taken up by the Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi with an objective of promotion of art in towns and villages of Punjab. About 14 actors from the city and vicinity have been rehearsing for a month for one show. The play is set in a village background where caste system still rules the roost and two major forces are at play. The positive forces are represented by a school teacher who propagates equality of life and dignity of labour. The negative forces are represented by those people who are on the lookout to damage any constructive activity that takes place in the village. The playwright has dealt the issue sensitively and in the process has tried to evolve a consensus over the issue of liberated thoughts. He attacks the dogmatic structure which refuses to relent, but at the same time he reflects the strength of goodness which, in the end, manages to tide over the troubles created by conservatives. The play will be presented for the first time before the art-loving public of the city. It will later be staged in the rural areas. |
