City observes ‘black day’
LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — In response to a call given by more than 100 social, religious and trade bodies, residents of the city, including members of trade and industry today observed "black day" to protest against the massacre of more than 100 Amarnath yatris in Jammu and Kashmir during last 48 hour.

Jagadguru for dismissal of J&K Govt
LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — Jagadguru Shankaracharya Jyotishpithadhi-shwar Swami Madhavashram today demanded the resignation of the J&K Chief Minister, Mr Farooq Abdullah, in the wake of the bloody carnage in the state in which more than 100 persons were killed.

, Aug 3 — Jagadguru Shankaracharya Jyotishpithadhi-shwar Swami Madhavashram today demanded the resignation of the J&K Chief Minister, Mr Farooq Abdullah, in the wake of the bloody carnage in the state in which more than 100 persons were killed.

YAD to plant saplings
LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — The Youth Akali Dal (YAD) will launch a tree plantation and population control drive from Patiala on August 4. The party president Mr Amrik Singh Aliwal, and other senior SAD(B) functionaries will plant saplings in the state library to formally open the campaign.

Gang of contract killers busted
LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — The Jagraon police today claimed to have busted a five- member gang of contract killers and thieves and recovered a big haul of arms and ammunition from them.

LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — Police has arrested five persons while they were in hiding and planning to commit a robbery. All the accused have been booked under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and Section 25 of the Arms Act.

Liquor contractors on warpath
LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — The battle for monopolising the liquor trade in Ludhiana, the biggest contributor to the total government revenue collected from excise, between members of the old cartel and the new entrants in the trade, under a revised policy in the current financial year, has hotted up, with both groups going all out to wreck each other. The auction of liquor vends for the current year had netted Rs 125 crore.

LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — An annual prize distribution of Punjab National Bank was held at Jawaddi yesterday. The PNB's Jawaddi branch was declared the best branch for the second consecutive year.

LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — The Arya Vidya Parishad, Punjab, has dissolved the management committee of the local Arya Boys Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines. It has appointed a three-member committee for the time being to run the affairs of the school.

, Aug 3 — A district court here has issued summons to the Punjab Governmen,t through its Secretary Health, the Civil Surgeon and the Senior Medical Officer here, in connection with an appeal filed by Ms Champa Devi, a resident of Janakpuri here, against the judgement and decree passed by a lower court.

Finance firm told to pay relief
LUDHIANA, Aug 3 — The District Consumer Redressal Forum today directed PSB Finance and Investment Ltd, Chandigarh, and its branch office Jagraon, through its manager, to refund all matured fixed deposit receipts amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh along with compensation and interest to Mr Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Sidhwan Bet village in this district.
