Centre, Hizb agree to set up panels
Militant body sets deadline

SRINAGAR, Aug 3 — A day after Kashmir’s biggest bloodbath in the decade, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and the Centre today agreed to set up committees to negotiate the modalities of a ceasefire and make the atmosphere “more conducive” in the valley.

SRINAGAR, Aug 3 — While inviting all militant groups other than the Hizbul Mujahideen to come to the negotiating table, the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, here today said all roads were open for restoration of peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

Suspend talks, say RSS outfits
NEW DELHI, Aug 3 — Even as the Centre began parleys with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, various Sangh Parivar outfits today demanded suspension of the peace talks, immediate dismissal of the Farooq Abdullah government and snapping of diplomatic ties with Pakistan, in the wake of the killing of Amarnath pilgrims and other Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir.

Badal conveys displeasure to PMO
NEW DELHI, Aug 3 — The Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal President, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, has dismissed the suggestion of the Union Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes, that he is in favour of a larger hill state of Uttaranchal in case Udham Singh Nagar is not retained in Uttar Pradesh.

Gujarat bandh turns violent, one killed
AHMEDABAD, Aug 3 —A man was stabbed to death in Surat and an indefinite curfew clamped in Khed Bhrama town in Sabarkantha district following mob violence during a statewide bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to protest against the killing of Amarnath pilgrims in Kashmir.

Manali-Leh road blocked
KULU, Aug 3 — The Manali-Leh highway is reported to be blocked beyond Pang, about 70 km short of Leh. At least 300 foreign tourists who were stranded at Pang returned to Manali today. These tourists have been complaining about inadequate arrangements made by the Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir Governments regarding keeping their respective tourist information offices informed about the road conditions.
