Hurriyat welcomes talks offer

Sees change in govt approach
SRINAGAR, July 29 — In a significant development, the Hurriyat Conference today hailed the Centre’s talks offer to the Hizbul Mujahideen “outside the framework of the Constitution” in response to its ceasefire announcement by the latter.

Halt operations, Army told
SRINAGAR, July 29 — Lieut-General J. R. Mukherjee, GOC, 15 Corps, today said that operations against militant organisations other than the Hizbul Mujahideen would continue in the Kashmir valley.

Advani hopeful of positive response
CHENNAI, July 29 — Union Home Minister L.K. Advani, today said the Centre was dealing with a "measure of caution" the declaration of three-month unilateral ceasefire by the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen and hoped its leaders would come overground for talks to facilitate the restoration of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Farooq meets PM, welcomes talks
NEW DELHI, July 29 — The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee today met leaders from Jammu and Kashmir including the state Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah. During a half-hour-long meeting this morning, Dr Abdullah informed the Prime Minister of the latest political and security scenario in the state while Mr Vajpayee apprised the Chief Minister of the Centre’s moves to initiate talks.

Five feared dead in aircrash
SHIMLA, July 29 — All five passengers, including two crew members, were killed when a private chartered plane on its way from Delhi to Kulu crashed into the Gargi Nullah near Kathabai village in Mandi district this afternoon.
