Badminton tourney begins

CHANDIGARH July 28 — The sixth District Badminton Championship began today at Sector 7 Community Centre, Panchkula, with seeded players having smooth sailing into next rounds. The three-day meet is being organised by the District Badminton Association, Panchkula.

The maximum number of entries were received in under-16 boys section. Mr SC Kansal, Chief Controller, Finance, HUDA, inaugurated the championship. Mr TR Tuli, Secretary of the association, highlighted the achievements of the association during the past one year. He told that despite one court hall, the response to the game was tremendous and they were hoping for a new hall in Sector 3 Sports Complex, which was due next year.

Carrom championship

The tenth Chandigarh state carrom championship will begin tomorrow at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45. A total of 205 participants, including 38 women, will vie for top honours in this six-day meet organised by the Chandigarh Carrom Association. The events to be conducted include, mens singles and doubles, boys singles and doubles, sub-junior boys singles and doubles, veterans singles, women singles and doubles, girls singles and doubles, and sub-junior girls singles and doubles.

Seedings: men — Gagandeep 1, Tejinder Harry 2; junior boys: — Ramanpreet 1, Dhruva 2; sub-junior boys — Taranpreet 1, Rahul Nanda 2; women — Anjali Negi 1, Saroj Chandel 2; junior girls — Shikha Nanda 1, Pallavi 2; sub junior girls — Nidhi Patwal 1, Eveleen 2; veterans — Subhash 1, RC Wadhwa 2. A total of 210 matches will be played in this meet, according to Mr Mahesh Sekhri, Secretary of the association.
