PU gym gets physiotherapy centre

CHANDIGARH, July 21 — A new physiotherapy centre in Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex of Panjab University was inaugurated by Prof M.M. Puri, Vice-Chancellor, here today. The inauguration function was attended by eminent sportspersons and various university officials.

Prof Puri inspected every machine installed in the centre. Some badminton players demonstrated the working of these units to him. Prof Puri has taken a keen interest in the establishment of this centre set up at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh. A committee of experts which built this centre in only two months, comprised Dr Ajmer Singh of the PU Sports Department; Dr Kewal Singh, Assistant Director; Mr Surinder Mahajan, PU Sports Officer; Dr Ashok Ahuja, Senior Scientific Officer of the NIS at Patiala; and Dr Arun Dixit of the PGI.

Now, sportspersons of the university, its affiliated colleges, and the other coaching centres in the city can use the facilities at this centre.

The facilities include the wax treatment, ice-cube therapy, waist-rotator belt, infrared lamp, shoulder wheel and sauna. Mr Mahajan said those who did not belong to the campus would be charged a nominal fee for using the facilities. A physiotherapist will also be available in the evening at the centre.

Dr Ajmer Singh said such a centre was an urgent requirement and could be expanded in phases. Ms Harinder Dhillon, President of the PUSC; Mr A. Sahni, DUI; Mr DK Mukerjee, founder and patron of the Chandigarh Badminton Association; Mr T.R. Tuli, Secretary of the District Badminton Association of Panchkula; Wing Cdr Satish Bhatia, a former international badminton player; Mr R.K. Gupta, Deputy Director of the Sports Authority of India, were among those who were present on the occasion.

Prof Puri has already allowed the use of the university gymnasium hall for badminton events of the National Games to be hosted by Punjab.

Daleep betters record

CHANDIGARH, July 21— Daleep Chandel bettered his record in the Free Rifle (ISSF) prone senior men individual category on the second day of the 25th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship at Sector 25 Patiali Rao Shooting ranges here today. He scored 276/300, while the previous best was 275/300.

Chandel was followed by Holinder Singh of Chandigarh Police, who scored 266/300 in the same event. In .22 std rifle open sight ( Prone)-NR, senior men Gagandeep Singh was leading with a score of 236/300, followed by Dharminder Singh Randhawa, who scored 230/300. In women, Aarti Mehta was leading in Air Rifle (OS)-NR senior women, with a score of 313/400. Hitesh Chauhan was ahead in Air Rifle (OS)-NR junior men, with a score of 277/300. Amninder Kaur was leading in senior women and sub-junior girls sections in event air pistol (NR), with score of 321/400.

In air pistol (NR) senior men and junior men sections, Paramvir Singh was ahead at 308/400, while Jasvinder Singh was leading in air rifle (ISSF) senior men, with score of 511/600. Pinky Chaudhary was ahead in .22 std rifle (NR) prone junior women section with a score of 207/300, followed by Jaspreet Kaur who scored 206/300. In junior men section, Gurinder Singh was leading with a score of 228/300, followed by Tejpal Singh at 200/300.

CBSE workshop: A workshop on physical education and health was organised by DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, under the aegis of the Central Board of School Education (CBSE). Mr Ravinder Talwar, Principal of the school, welcomed Dr GP Gautam, OSD, CBSE, Dr AK Uppal, Dr JS Munjal and Dr SN Sharma. Mr Talwar emphasised that sports and physical education were integral parts of education. He added that a sound mind resides in a sound body.

In all, 77 participants representing various schools of North India took part. Dr Uppal from LNIPE, Gwalior, told that after great struggle, teachers of physical education acquired the real status of a teacher. He praised the efforts made by Mr Talwar in this direction. Dr Gautam also lauded the role of Mr Talwar by taking the lead in organising this workshop. He further told that CBSE was making sincere efforts to streamline sports. Dr Munjal delivered the lecture on health education and dwelled on the importance of personal care of health of family and community health.Back

Anandgarh panel meets on July 24

CHANDIGARH, July 21 — The Project Approval Committee on Anandgarh city will meet on July 24 to discuss and finalise the dossier, "The vision for the new city and guidelines to the architects". The meeting would be chaired by Dr Upinderjit Kaur, Minister of Housing and Urban Development.

The dossier has been prepared by the experts, including Mr J.R Bhalla, former President of the Indian Council of Architecture, Ms Veena Garela, Professor at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, and Mr N.S Sodhi, retired Chief Engineer, Punjab.

The meeting would also be attended by Mr R.S Ballian, Minister of State of Housing and Urban Development, the Chief Secretary Punjab and Principal Secretary of Housing and Development. Mr B.S Dhunder, a member of Parliament has also been invited to the meeting.

Ms Vini Mahajan, Chief Administrator of the New Town Planning and Development Authority, Anandgarh, said, "On the basis of these documents, the shortlisted architects are expected to begin work for the design and planning of the proposed city".

It may be recalled that 10 architects had been shortlisted out of a total of 44 who applied. A Chandigarh-based architects' firm, Satnam Namita and Associates, Mumbai-based Charles Correa and B.V. Doshi are among the eight other architects shortlisted for the project.

The other shortlisted architects include Devlopment Consultants, New Delhi, Kanvinde Rai Chowdhary, New Delhi, Kuldeep Singh, New Delhi, N.M Salim and Associates, Calicut, Raj Rewal and Associates, New Delhi, Swayin and Associates, Orissa, and Auroservices D' Aurville Trust, Pondicherry.

The shortlisting was approved by the Project Approval Committee on July 12. All 44 applications were scrutinised by the Chief Architect and Chief Town Planner Punjab.

Ambala-UT-Kalka electrified rail link

MC panel favours Central pattern
Appointments on compassionate basis

CHANDIGARH, July 21 — The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today recommended the adoption of the Central pattern regarding appointments on compassionate ground to the next of the kin of the deceased employees.

At a meeting here, the committee, however, rejected the proposal pertaining to the adoption of instructions of the Punjab Government where there was no ceiling on compassionate appointments. The Central pattern, which had been adopted by the UT Administration, stipulates that compassionate appointments could only be made up to a maximum of 5 per cent of the vacancies in a year falling under direct recruitment quota in the Class "C" and "D" posts.

The committee recommended that the dependents of the deceased employees should be employed on a daily wage basis and adjusted against the 5 per cent quota whenever the vacancies occur.

The members were also informed about the approval of the administration regarding the provisions of the independent WC, bath and water tap for 4,090 dwelling units to be allotted to slum dwellers of the Sector 25 colony. The public health services and amenities would be provided at a cost of Rs 3.552 crore under a special grant from the administration.

The F&CC further approved an estimate of Rs 14.45 lakh for the purchase of cloth and stitching summer uniforms to be supplied to 1,701 Class "D" employees of the Medical Officer of Health Wing.Back



 

Cops get posting orders

CHANDIGARH, July 21 — The posting orders of the personnel who have been reverted from the airport security were issued here this evening.

The DSP, Mr Surjit Singh, will head the Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell while Inspectors Natha Singh, Shivraj Singh Sidhu and Ishwar Singh Mann have been posted in the Operations Cell against vacant posts. With this, the number of inspectors in this cell goes to five.

SIs Gurbax Singh and Ravi Dutt have been posted to the security wing, SI Daryao Singh to VIP Security, SIs Ram Saroop and Dharam Pal to Central Police Station, and SI Chander Singh to Police Lines. Similarly, SIs Satya Bala and Tripta Kumari have been posted to Police Lines and CAW cell, SIs Mann Singh and Ran Singh have been sent to the Police Lines. Besides this, SI Shisha Singh has been posted to security.

ASIs Kanwar Pal, Tek Chand, Balbir Singh, Darshan Singh, Ghanshyam Rana and Tarlochan Singh have been posted to police stations south, west, north, Sector 39, Industrial Area and the Police Lines, respectively. ASIs Karnail Kaur, Ramesh Chand, Surinder Kumar and Madhu Bala have been asked to report at the lines, the Sector 31 police station, Mani Majra and CAW cell, respectively.

On the other hand, Inspector Ashwani Kumar and SI Jaswinder Singh, who joined after serving in the UN Mission in Kosovo, have been posted to the CID and traffic cells, respectively.

As many as 16 cops, who had passed their lower course from Phillaur, were also promoted to the rank of head constable today.Back
