NSTC scheme of SAI to be modified
By Our Sports Reporter

CHANDIGARH, July 11 — The NSTC scheme of the Sports Authority of India which once had four sport disciplines of athletics, volleyball, football and hockey at Shivalik Public School, SAS Nagar, will now have modifications and the residential scheme will be replaced by day boarding scheme in three centres.

This was conveyed by Dr P.C. Kashyap, Director in charge of the Northern centre, SAI, here while talking to newspersons.

A few months ago the trials were conducted for DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, in six disciplines — athletics, football, hockey, volleyball, gymnastics and rowing. However, the corporate sector has given proposal for only day boarding scheme in football at DAV School, while Shivalik Public School, where the decision to do away with all centres was taken, will now have hockey and volleyball under this scheme.

Dr Kashyap said that this year, instead of the old practice of Rs 20000/- as grant for maintenance and infrastructure, this will be hiked to Rs 5 lakh for existing centres and Rs 10 lakh for new centres as approved by the Union Minister of Sports, Mr S.S. Dhindsa.

The new centres were being opened at Badal (Punjab), Mastuana Sahib (Sangrur) in girls and boys section in different sports. At Mastuana Sahib they will have 400 x 400 metre new track also. Recently at Dashmesh Academy of Martial Arts, Anandpur Sahib, trials were conducted in as fencing, boxing, judo, wrestling.

Mr Kashyap also said that in Haryana, two new akharas in Jind and Rohtak district will be opened, while four in Punjab at Dara Studio, SAS Nagar, Baba Farid (Faridkot), Sursi (Amritsar) and Gole Bagh (Amritsar). CRZ Sonepat will have wrestling and athletics, while Nehru Garden School, Jalandhar, will have athletics and hockey. The Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai (Sonepat) will be revived and here better facilities will be created.

He also said that they had got the approval from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, for starting the national physical fitness programme for 8 to 18 years in order to involve every child in the school, which was the crux of the physical activity. He said Rs 2 lakh annually will be spent and the programme will begin from October this year.

Mr Kashyap also described the importance of code of ethics. The weekly training programme of trainees and the coaches monitoring will be judged through the same. He said though the sports science centre was to be completed by August 15 this year as deadline given by him, but in the initial phase only items which could be purchased at Rs 25 lakh sanctioned will be installed. He said the total budget of Rs 5 crore or more for full-fledged sciences centre will be borne by the SAI. On July 8, the Union Sports Minister had said at Chandigarh that 400 employees of SAI will be dispensed with and in future the coaches will be taken on contract basis. Mr Kashyap said that the target was to cut on establishment costs.

But one of the sports official on condition of anonymity said that the sports sciences centre will actually be a fitness centre.

When questioned about the recent allegation by the UT Sports Department that SAI owes arrears for the consumption of electricity and water charges, he replied that when the amount will be told the payment will be made. On the other day, UT officials had told that they will be shifting to the Sector 42 sports complex. Mr Kashyap said that as desired by the Union Sports Minister, the land in SAS Nagar may be allotted to SAI for making it a regional centre having all facilities.

He said the centre of excellence in women hockey would be having trials on July 13 and 14.

When asked about the decision of the Director-General, SAI, Mr D.K. Mittal, to have all centres of excellence in joint venture with corporate sector, Mr Kashyap said he tried but could not get any positive feedback.
