PANCHKULA, July 9 —  Sector 7 market of the township  has become better known for the notoriety of the youngsters thronging the place in the evenings in recent times. From the hub of activity, the market is slowly degenerating to become a “den’’ for the nefarious activities of the children of the “rich and famous’’, the shopkeepers aghast with the situation contend.


Cases of water-borne diseases on rise
CHANDIGARH, July 9 — There is a mild increase in the incidence of water-borne diseases and viral infections following the onset of the monsoon season. As a result of the hot and humid weather, more people are coming to the city dispensaries and private clinics with symptoms of gastric disorders and viral fever.

Bunch of mangoes
Bunches of grapes and litchis are common but it is rare to find such a big bunch of mangoes as seen in the picture. This happened on a mango tree located here in the Army cantonment. The tree has only this bunch of mangoes. As many as 34 mangoes are visible in the picture and the number can go up to 45 if mangoes at the backside too are counted. Government negotiates 870-crore ADB loan
CHANDIGARH, July 9 — The Government of India has negotiated a Rs 870-crore credit with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to finance urban infrastructural projects in India, Mr Ashok Pahwa, Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, said at a road show here.

4 held on eve-teasing charges
CHANDIGARH, July 9 — In separate incidents, the police has arrested four persons on the charges of eve-teasing. According to police sources, Jagmeet, Harjit and Sukhjinder Singh, were arrested from near Kiran Cinema for passing indecent remarks against passing girls.

Science seats filled in two more schools
CHANDIGARH, July 9 — As many as 1084 students have been admitted to several government schools, in the ongoing admissions to class XII. Two more schools have been added to the count, where the seats for science stream have been filled. In science stream, 74 seats for general category have been filled both at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10.

CHANDIGARH, July 9 — Banta Singh bagged two gold medals in the 100 mt and 200 mt race in the above 70 years category in the Chandigarh State Veterans Athletic Meet held today. In the men category, Ram Murti Kalia won the 100 mt, 200 mt and 5 km walk by securing first position in each. 

Football academy trials today
CHANDIGARH, July 9 — The final selection trials for the Chandigarh Football Academy will begin here tomorrow at the Sector 7 sports complex. According to Mr JPS Sidhu, Joint Director, Sports UT Administration, the preliminary trials were held at Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Dharamsala and Mahilpur, where in all 55 boys in the age group of 9-10 were finalised for the final trials.

Population Day race on July 11
