AMRITSAR
TRAINING PLAN: Mr J.S. Mann, Deputy Director, Sainik Welfare Association, has informed that the next Army recruitment training programme is slated for June 30. Ex-servicemen and wards of serving Army personnel can apply with full documents and fitness certificate on June 28 at the Sainik Bhalai Office.

NO RATION CARDS: The residents of Sahibzada Fateh Singh Nagar, outside gate Hakima, have complained that the civil supplies authorities have not issued ration cards to them. No officer has ever visited the area to conduct a survey for ration cards, they claimed. The Public Welfare Society has requested the authorities to look into the matter and do the needful.

HOSHIARPUR
WOMAN HELD: Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, in a press note issued here on Friday said that Soma, wife of Gopal Chand of Fatehgarh Khurd village, had been arrested under Section 302, IPC, for allegedly poisoning to death Kulvir Singh of the same village. Jasvir Singh, brother of the deceased, had a quarrel with Gopal Chand some time ago. Later, both of them compromised. But to take revenge, Soma allegedly poisoned Kulvir Singh.

MALERKOTLA
GANG BUSTED: The Amargarh police has arrested Buta Gir of Shekhupur, Bhim Gir of Pipel Khedi in Patiala and recovered two illegal pistols of 315 and 12 bore from them. According to ASP Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, these accused were involved in many cases of robbery. A case has been registered against them.

MOGA
WATER SHORTAGE: Residents of several villages in this district are facing an acute shortage of drinking water and power for the past several months. Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, they complained that they had not received drinking water since the onset of paddy sowing operations. They were also not receiving power for more than two to three hours a day.

DEMONSTRATIONS: Members of the Water Supply Sewerage Karamchari Union’s local unit on Friday staged demonstrations in protest against the alleged manhandling of their co-workers by shopkeepers in the main bazar when they were digging nullahs in the area. They threatened that if the local administration did not take action against the shopkeepers concerned they would stop their work and intensify their agitation.

NAWANSHAHR
AGENT HELD: Mr Ishwar Singh, SSP, in a press note issued here on Friday, informed that the Banga police had arrested travel agent Ajit Singh, alias Surjit Singh, for allegedly duping Gurdev Singh of Rs 10 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad. Along with another travel agent, Bhupi of Delhi, were involved in sending youths abroad.

PROMOTIONS SOUGHT: A deputation of the Punjab State General Category Welfare Federation, under the presidentship of Mr Shamlal Sharma, met the DPI (Schools) and the Education Secretary, Punjab, at Chandigarh on Thursday and urged them to expedite their promotions. The deputation also urged them to prepare rosters for granting promotions to fill the backlog of vacancies.

OFFICE-BEARERS: Mr Vinod Kumar Arora and Mr R.K. Jain have been elected president and secretary, respectively, of the local Rotary Club.

PATHANKOT
BRIDGE WORK: Construction work of the Pontoon bridges on the Ravi near Kathlore and the Ujh near Khojkichak has been allotted to contractors by the Building and Roads authorities. This has been announced by Prof Samrendra Sharma, political Secretary to Mr Vinod Khanna, MP.

PATIALA
COMMANDANT CAUGHT: A Central Bureau of Investigation team arrested a local MES Works and Engineers Commandant for accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a contractor in his office in the Old Cantonment area on Friday. A CBI team caught Commandant P.K. Verma accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a contractor for passing a bill pending with him. The CBI team had come from Chandigarh on a complaint filed by the contractor that the Commandant was asking for money to pass a bill. The Commandant was arrested under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1998, and presented before the Deputy Magistrate, M.D.S. Dhillon. He was remanded in police custody till June 27. The CBI team had also recovered details of shares invested by the Commandant in various companies, besides details of property owned by him. Verma had allegedly also bought stocks worth few lakhs in various companies in the past two months. 

HIJACK CASE: The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr M.S. Chouhan, on Saturday adjourned hearing into IC-814 hijacking case, in which an Indian Airlines plane was diverted to Kabul after taking off from Kathmandu. The three accused — Abdul Lateef, Yusuf Nepali and Dalip Kumar — were produced before the judge under tight security arrangements. While Abdul Latif and Yusuf Nepali had been apprehended from Bombay during the stand-off at Kabul, Dalip Kumar had been arrested from Kalimpong. Latif and Nepali are accused of supplying arms and ammunition to the hijackers. Dalip was responsible for procuring these. — TNS

JE's STIR: The 24-hour chain fast by Junior Engineers of the Punjab State Electricity Board against the violation of wage formulation committee recommendation entered the third day on Saturday. Mr Davinder Singh, Additional General Secretary of Junior Engineers Council, said in a press release that they were fighting against injustice meted out to their cadre in regard to pay scales and promotional scales. 

APPEAL: Lion’s International appealed to the people of Patiala on Friday for donation of their eyes. Mr N.K. Dutta donated his late father V.P. Dutta’s eyes, who died on June 13. His eyes have benefited Gurdial Singh of Jakhwali village and Sukhwinder Kaur of Lambe village. Mr V.D. Shoria appealed to the residents of Patiala to come forward to help those who were deprived of the beautiful sight of this earth.

TWO KILLED: One Radhey Shyam Tewari was killed in an accident near Rawalpindi village on Friday. He hailed from Ghaziabad. Gulshan was injured in the mishap. In another accident, a scooterist was knocked down by a speeding vehicle here.

DHARNA: The Punjab and Chandigarh Medical and Sales Representatives Union (PCMSRU) sat on a dharna on Friday in front of the Ranbaxy factory to protest against the alleged illegal termination of Mr Ranjan Sharma, a medical representative with Ranbaxy Pharma Marketing. Mr Sanjay Puri, President of the union, in a memorandum to the Managing Director of the company, demanded that the management of the company immediately initiated dialogue to solve the issue. — TNS

CREMATED: Lt. Col (retd) Balbir Singh Bahiya (78) was cremated on Friday in the presence of a large number of prominent citizens and political leaders, including Mr Ranbir Singh, a former MP and freedom fighter, and Ms Krishna Gehlaut, Ms Shanti Rathi and Mr Mehar Singh Rathi, all former ministers. He died at Base Hospital, Delhi, on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife and four sons. Born in this district in 1921, he joined the army in 1939 and participated in World War II. He also took part in the Indo-China war in 1962.

VC TO MEET PUBLIC: The Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University, Maj-Gen B.S. Suhag, will be available for meeting the public from 12.30 p.m. to 1.15 p.m. during week days. The Vice-Chancellor’s secretariat has introduced a schedule for disposal of office business with immediate effect. The time for meeting deans of faculties, heads of university teaching departments and branch officers will be 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 noon.

THREE HURT: Three persons suffered injuries in a shootout between two groups of a family in Kuttabarh village of the district, according to the information received here on Friday. An old dispute between Chanderpaul and his cousin Ram Lal and Satpal led to the incident. The police has booked Richpal, Dharampaul, Subhash and few others in connection with the incident.

YOUTH SHOT AT: Rajesh Kumar, a youth of Rohat village, was shot at and injured while he was going to meet his younger brother in the mandi area here on Thursday. He was rushed to the local Civil Hospital. The incident occurred near the city police station and yet the assailant escaped. The police has registered a case. Old enmity is stated to be the cause of the attack.Top

BILASPUR
STIR THREAT: The Himachal unit of the NSUI has warned the government and the HP University authorities it will be forced to launch an agitation if the recent 35 per cent hike in fees by the varsity is not immediately withdrawn. Addressing mediapersons here on Friday, NSUI state unit senior vice-president Sanjay Guleria alleged that the university has become a hotbed of irregularities.

PANCHAYATS WARNED: Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chander Sharma has given a warning to all panchayats in the district to issue ration cards as per rules. He has directed that the names of only those living permanently in the panchayat area should be included in the ration card and the names of those belonging to a panchayat but living outside its jurisdiction should not be included in the ration card.

ALLOCATED: Mr Suresh Chandel, MP, has said that the Centre has allocated Rs 300 crore for the construction of Banupali-Bilaspur railway line. Accompanied by Himachal Minister of State for Cooperatives Rikhiram Mondal, he addressed a series of public meetings at Jarloo, laid the foundation stone of a mahila mandal bhavan at Karch, inaugurated a Rs 2.20 lakh bridge, laid the foundation stone of a mahila mandal bhawan at Sangaswin and opened a mahila mandal bhavan at Tamri in Gehadwin assembly constituency on Thursday.

MANDI
KILLED: Narsingh Datt, a Congress leader of Karsog, died in a scooter accident on Thursday and his son-in-law, Puran Chand, was seriously injured. Puran Chand was driving and Narsingh Datt was on the pillion when the scooter hit a boulder near a bridge at Pangna and fell into khud. Datt died on the spot. Puran Chand has been referred to Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital, Shimla. Datt was cremated in his ancestral village in the presence of a large number of people, including Food and Supplies Minister Mansa Ram.

MAHOTSAVA: Naturopathy expert Rai Bal Yogi has announced that ‘prabhu kevalam mahotsava’ will be organised in the Hindu Dharamshala here on June 24 and 25 for the spiritual benefit of the common people and those suffering from chronic diseases.

SENTENCED: Mr Manoj Kumar Bansal, additional Judicial Magistrate, has sentenced Kanheya Lal and Shahid Mohammad, both workers of a local rosin and turpentine factory, to simple imprisonment for 3 months each and imposed a fine of Rs 1000 each on them. On January 22 this year, both accused trespassed into the official residence of Mr S.D. Sharma, General Manager, HP Rosin and Turpentine Factory, manhandled and abused him and threatened to kill him.Top
