City to host ball badminton meet CHANDIGARH, June 24 — The Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association will hold the 20th Sub-Junior National Championship from August 31 to September 3 in the Sector 41 Shivalik Public School. Mr Harbhushan Gulati, President of the association, said 46 teams of various affiliated state units other institutions would take part in the meet. The meet will expose local boys and girls to players of the southern regions who dominate the game. Past year's winners, Andhra Pradesh (boys) and Kerala (girls), were also expected to be among the participants. Mr Baljinder Singh Banwait, Secretary of the association, said the game was still in its infancy in the city. "However, after watching nearly 100 trainees practice daily in Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, one feels that the game is becoming popular," he said. He said participants would be provided with free accommodation in the Sector 42 Sport Complex. Mr Banwait said the indoor facility in the school could be used in case of rain. Mr Farmesh Singh, Vice-President of the association, said the four-day championship would have more than 100 matches. He said as woolen balls were used in this game, western countries did not accept it. Mr Banwait said there was a scarcity of qualified coaches in this sport and former players were training youngsters. Mr Banwait also said since it was not an Olympic sport, getting sponsors was difficult. He said organisers were working hard to get donations from various persons who wished to promote the game. He said in last sub-junior national championship at Allahabad, Andhra Pradesh had stood first in the boys' section, followed by Hyderabad, Karnataka and Kerala. Kerela had won in the girls' section where Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Orissa had stood second third and fourth. He said they had planned a series of coaching camps for the Chandigarh team in preparation for the national meet. |
