Anti-malaria race organised

CHANDIGARH, June 23 — The malaria wing today organised a race for prevention and control of malaria. It was a unique information, education and communication activity which was observed to propagate the theme of “malaria control everyone’s concern” during the observance of the anti-malaria month.

The participants, wearing T-shirts and caps bearing the slogan “no mosquito no malaria’’ and “stop mosquito breeding,” started the race from the Housing Board chowk up to the CITCO chowk.

Later the participants were divided into different groups for spreading the message for the prevention and control of malaria in various sectors. Placards, boards of different colours carrying attractive messages and bright-coloured banners were used for creating awareness about the observance of the anti-malaria month.

The main purpose of organising the race was to create awareness among the masses so that residents can themselves take steps for the prevention and control of mosquitoes and malaria.

The employees of the malaria wing took part in the race. The race was flagged off by Dr Joginder Singh, Director, Health Services, UT. Representatives of the Government of India and members of the task force and the rapid response team for the prevention and control of malaria also participated in the race.Back

Panchkula joins the Olympic Day spirit
India win kabaddi tie against Pakistan

CHANDIGARH, June 23 — The occasion was Olympic Day, the venue was the Sector 5 ground at Panchkula, the spirit was upbeat. It was a grand sport day for about 10,000 Panchkula residents who assembled there to watch the proceedings.

The day began with mini-marathon races for men, women, boys and girls. More than 250 runners selected from various districts of Haryana took part in the races. The men's and women's 10 km events had more than 160 participants. Joginder of Gurgaon won the men's race, Pardeep of Gurgaon took second place and Hari Om, also of Gurgaon, was at the third position. In the mini marathon for women, Sunil Joon of Jhajjar was first, Ravina of Jhajjar second and Suman of Karnal third.

In the 3 km race, out of 60 runners, Vinod of Hisar stood first with a timing of 9:03.26 sec. Ram Bilas of Gurgaon came second and Vinod of Sonepat third. In the 1,500 m race featuring more than 50 girls, Renu of Jhajjar took the first place with a timing of 5:16.44 sec. Manjeet of Panchkula was second and Renu of Sonepat third. They were given cash prizes of up to Rs 10,000.

After the flagging off of mini marathon, the Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr O.P. Chautala, laid the foundation stone of Rs 2 crore Olympic Bhavan on a 1 acre plot adjacent to the Sector 3 sport complex. Earlier, it was to be built in Sector 15, but, since HUDA was making a big sport complex in Sector 3, it was decided to construct the bhavan there. The Secretary General of the Indian Olympics Association, Mr Randhir Singh, and the President of the Haryana Olympics Association, Mr Abhay Chautala, were also present there. The day was celebrated at five places in India.

The ground was decked with flowers and hosted administrators and eminent sportspersons. A volleyball match between India Blue and India Red was also organised. The teams comprising 12 players each had already been practicing at Patiala for the Princess Asia Cup to be held in Bangkok from July 3. The match was won by India Blue, 25-23, 25-19. Mr Raj Kumar, Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of India, was also present there along with chief coaches of NIS, Patiala, and the other SAI officials. Some players of the Indian men's volleyball team like Amir Singh and Anil Kumar were also there.

The teams were as follows: India Red — M. Sunitha, Geeta Raju, Mini Elizabeth, Vini Thomas, Gayatri, Ghisa Thomas, S. Sujatha, Sanja Seikh, S. Latha, Hemlatha, Zahira and Karuna; India Blue — Mithu Roy, P. Radhika, Vaishali, Sigi Kurian, Sukhwinder Kaur, Hemlatha Usha, Mini Mol V.S., Siza ML, Nagavardhini, Sumanpreet Kaur, Alpana and Indu.

Tug-of-war matches were held between Kanganpur and Thed villages and Haryana Vidhan Sabha XI and Punjab Vidhan Sabha XI. The Haryana team was led by the Speaker, Mr Satbir Singh Kadian, and included Mr Abhay Chautala, Mr Jaswinder Sandhu Agriculture Minister, Mr Ashok Kumar, Transport Minister, and some other MLAs. The Punjab team had Mr Charanjit Atwal, Speaker, Mr Inderjit Singh Zira, Mr Nursat Ali Khan, Sports Minister, and some other MLAs. The Punjab team won the match, 2-0.

A 600 m race for these legislators was also organised. Cultural items like giddha, bhangra, bum lahiri by Mahavir Guddu and Rajasthani group dance attracted the spectators.

Then came the chief attraction of the day — a circle-kabaddi match between Pakistan and India. The visiting Pakistan team managed by Chaudhary Muhammad Ismail was in high spirits. The moment the visting team in yellow-black track suits began warm-up exercises, the crowd greeted them with claps.

The match began 40 minutes late and India won, 53-46, after leading, 25-19, at half time.Back

 

 
ADMINISTRATION

Licence of parking lot cancelled

CHANDIGARH, June 23 — Following repeated complaints of over-charging, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) has cancelled the licence of the contractor of the parking lot opposite the Sukhna Lake here.

According to a press note, the contract had been cancelled as besides the charge of over-charging, his token slips were not printed according to the prescribed perfroma and employees of the contractor were not wearing proper uniform.

The contractor had been directed to hand over the vacant possession immediately and up to date dues along with interest will be deducted from his security deposit.

Encroachments removed: The Enforcement Wing removed over 120 encroachments from the internal roads of Sector 21-D here.

Recruitment rally from June 27

CHANDIGARH, June 23 — A recruitment rally for soldier (general duty) is being held by the branch recruiting office, Mandi for candidates hailing from Mandi, Kulu and Lahaul - Spiti districts of Himachal Pradesh from June 27 to 30.

According to a statement issued here yesterday, the rally would be organised at the H.P. Police Battalion Grounds, Pandoh.

Candidates hailing from Sadar Mandi, Chachyot and Thunag tehsils of Mandi district will be screened on June 27, while those hailing from Kulu district and Sarkaghat tehsil of Mandi district will be screened on June 28. Candidates from Sundernagar, Jogindernagar, Padhar and Karsog tehsils of Mandi district will be recruited on June 29.

Sons of serving personnel, ex-servicemen, widows and war widows belonging to Mandi district as well as candidates from Lahul- Spiti will be recruited on June 30. However, sons of serving personnel, ex-servicemen, widows and war widows will be entertained on all days.

Candidates who qualify in the physical fitness test and found medically fit will be called for a written Common Entrance Test scheduled to be held at the same venue on July 30.

Five-day working week in PU offices

Coal depot scheme for martyrs’ kin

CHANDIGARH, June 23 — The Haryana Government today decided to allocate coal depots to dependants of defence personnel who were either wounded or martyred during the Kargil operation.

The Deputy Commissioner of Mahendargarh, Mr V. Raja Sekhar, said all dependants of wounded or martyred Kargil soldiers interested in getting coal depots should send their applications immediately to the office of the Food and Supplies Department of Haryana in the district.

Punjab Government irrigation plan

CHANDIGARH, June 23 — The Punjab Government today announced rotational programme for the kharif season from June 24 to July 1, on a priority basis.

The channels of the Sirhind canal system will run on priority from the Abohar branch, Patiala feeder, Bisat Doab Canal, Sidhwan Branch and Bathinda branch.

A spokesman for the Irrigation Department said the distributaries of the Bhakra main line, Ghaggar branch and Patiala minor being the channels of first preference would run to their indent. Surplus water would be utilised in direct distributaries of the Bhakra main line.

Curbs on discos, pubs

CHANDIGARH, June 23 — All restaurants, pubs, wine shops, discos, clubs and roadside vendors in the city will have to wind up their operations by midnight everyday. All such establishments will also have to remain closed from midnight to 4.30 a.m.

The order will remain in force from June 26 to August 24.

Seven villages in transitional area

ZIRAKPUR, June 23 — The Department of Local Government of Punjab has declared the local area, comprising seven villages — Zirakpur, Lohgarh, Himmatgarh, Bishanpura, Bishangarh, Bartana and Dhakauli — of Dera Bassi tehsil, to be the transitional area for constituting Nagar Panchayat, to serve the purpose of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1911.

The government has asked for objections from the inhabitants of the transitional area in writing to the Principal Secretary to Government of Punjab, Department of Local Government, within 15 days from the publication of the notification.
